Spectacular ‘blood moon’ lunar eclipse set for April 15

Sky watchers are getting ready for an evening of special viewing when a total lunar eclipse arrives just after midnight on April 15. What's more, this begins a rare sequence of four total lunar eclipses expected over the next two years.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon line up so the Earth's shadow falls on the moon, darkening it. A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon line up so the Earth's shadow falls on the moon, darkening it.

At first, the full moon will just appear to be a little darker than normal, "but eventually people will notice a much darker arc moving across the moon, with a distinct rusty reddish-brown color," said astronomer Gerald McKeegan at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, Calif.

The bloody red color the moon takes on during an eclipse is caused by refraction of sunlight by the Earth's atmosphere.

Thanks for posting this Noel. I've calendared all four dates. Considering my history with astronomical events there will be a high probability of cloudy skies or rain but I'm eternally hopeful.

I specifically looked for that info and found nothing. But the above article tells when it starts of the east coast, so I'm hoping that means we can all see it.

We're up at 3:00 am here so I hope we can catch part of it. That's the first thing we look at .... love the moon in the early morning.

DH is usually up at 4 a.m. (way too early for me). We like to watch the phases of the moon. My favorite is the Harvest Moon, looks like a giant pumpkin.

I am going to write this down but if you would be so kind could you remind us closer to that date I don't want to miss this. I watch the international space station go over every night that it is in our area and the sky is clear enough to see it . Thank you

Thanks for sharing the info Noel, that should be cool to see. I have always been fascinated by the planets and stars and all that "stuff out there". Hope I remember to take a look at it on the 15th.
