babysitter rates

What's the current hourly rate for a babysitter? Not a daycare provider...a sitter like one might engage for an evening.

Esme, I hate to bring up the phrase "look it up" but I must in this case. I just did because I no longer know what the going rate is. I nearly fell out of my chair when I read this one site. babysitting-rates dot com

$8-12 an HOUR? Gulp... They can vary from as "little" as $4 an hour to $18 an hour.

I need to go to back to work as a sitter. I counted myself lucky to get 50 cents an hour back in high school!

I don't know if this is the norm but most of my friends who have smaller children pay $10 an hour. Now if they have like three kids, they may go up a couple of bucks. If it is M-F with set hours than they pay a set weekly fee and not the $10 an hour.

Wow! Rates have gone up since "back in the day"! And the perks are better too, I imagine...better TV, possibly more permissive parents (the BF can stop over for a visit), and maybe some $$ for a pizza delivery.

That website said many teens get $5 an hour, but an adult sitter with nanny experience or a number of years babysitting experience would expect $10 an hour. And that's for ONE kid!! $1 per for each additional kid.

In this area, NY/northern NJ, the average for one child is between 12-14 dollars per hour. It goes UP for more than one child. If the babysitter is certified in CPR, the starting amount, in this area, is 16.00 per hour.

ETA: There is a young woman I volunteer with that negotiates a flat amount for her three children. That is popular when someone has 3+ children, at least according to her.

And if the child is under the age of two, add $2 an hour for diaper changing, feeding, dressing, putting down for a nap....

I thought that was part of the job?? In today's market I could have made a flipping fortune!

Usually about $10 an hour depending on how many kids and if they have to feed them, etc...

my daughter gets $10 and hour for one child, slightly more for additional kids, and extra money if she is there after midnight.

in the 90s i was paying 5-6 dollars an hour for 3 kids.....and left money to order a pizza.

when i was doing it i got $1 an hour and one of the parents had to pick me up and take me home. LOL

I bet the kids loved babysitting for you. Only the cool parents left money for pizza.

I got 50 cents an hour, double that after midnight! and was expected to wash the dishes...by hand.

Tam- In the "old days" of babysitting I never got paid extra for feeding the kids, putting them to bed, doing baths. It was part of the 50 cents an hour! Of course my favorite family always had a meal ready for me to serve or the kids had already been fed. I might sit for 6-7 hours at night and I was happy to get $5-8 for my 'trouble'. I was also picked up and brought home.

I remember getting $50 for staying the weekend while they went away. I was happy. 3 kids, one of whom was an infant.

50 cents an hour that was the good old days, 1.00 after midnight. I always hoped they would stay out late.

I have 4 neighbors that all had kids two years ago and all the wives elected to stay home and not go back to work. All of them in their 30s. That's pretty unusual. I don't think any of the women had high paying jobs at the time.

In the 1960's, I got 50 cents an hour which was half the minimum wage back then. Now it seems that baby sitters get way over minimum wage.
