What is a good camera for a beginner that I could use until I get pretty good. I will spend what I need to but I wanted your suggestions.

LOL! I know nothing about cameras so I have no idea what you mean when you say DSLR.

I want a good camera because I have a grandson coming soon but I am also starting a skin care blog and want to be able to take good pictures of products and such. I see other blogs (makeup, skincare and even food blogs_ and the pictures are really good with very clear and crisp pictures and I want that but something I can grow into and use if I happen to get really good at it. I don't know that will happen but I don't want to have to get something else later. Does that make sense?

DSLR (digital single lens reflex) -- interchangeable lens camera

I always recommend Canon DSLRs since I feel they are more user friendly with the menus and buttons. Buy the body (the latest Rebel is wonderful -- T5i) with an 18-55 lens. I also suggest a 50mm lens (f1.4) to go along with and if you like to zoom add the Tamron 70-300.

If you do not want to get into all the lenses and filters and such -- look at a Panasonic Lumix superzoom.

Skip a pocket camera and use an iPhone (favorite apps -- Camera+ and Hipstamatic)

Thank you so much! I am going to print this out and research. I do want to be able to put different lenses on it.

I have also heard a lot of people taking photos with their iPhones because they do take some good pictures!

all types of photos --

I have printed my iPhone images from 2.5 inches square to 24 inches square. I have many hanging in a gallery and last fall had a show of images shot exclusively with my iPhone. Many bloggers (especially food bloggers) use iPhone images.

Next week I am shipping two iPhone images to Texas for shows and one to an exhibit in California.

Photo donna...what is the resolution of the photos from the iphone?

I know they take good photos, just wondering what the resolution was.....and I guess it would make a difference on which phone you have, correct?

PD is right! my iphone takes the best pictures! so clear and crisp - i have printed out many and framed. people can not believe it when i tell them it was with my iphone and NOT a $$$ digital camera!

Camera+ straight out of the phone is 3264x2448

Hipstamatic straight out of the phone on highest setting is 2448x2448

These are both 72 dpi -- which is what comes from my DSLR (72 dpi). I resize in Photoshop.

I edit and layer images in phone all the time.

I would only ever use an iPhone -- Android cannot touch it with apps. I have the 4S.

I own a printing business and am just curious, I get a lot of photos via email attachments so I don't know if they are from tradational cameras or iphones.

Are you working on a Mac or PC...sorry for the 20 questions, I'm just curious.

I can't imagine why it matters if a photograph is made with a regular camera or an iPhone or if I am on a Mac or PC???

The images out of my DSLR are 3888x2592 and 72 -- most cameras output is 72dpi and you resize to print.

Since you run a printing business -- do you ever resize for people? Do people send you images straight from a device?

Oh..it does not matter if it is a mac or pc, that was a curious question. I always used a Mac for graphic design and set up of job work.

Yes I resize all the time, at football season we do school programs loaded with photos of athletes, coaches, etc. Those photos are 72 dpi and large, I resize for the space allowed.

well -- right out of my DSLR they are 54inx36in and 72dpi. The pixel dimensions I posted earlier -- if you do the math it shows just over 10 million pixels or a 10 megapixel camera.

I did the math and my iPhone comes out to an 8 megapixel camera.

I have found teaching classes again that most people buy all the gear and then really don't learn a lot about it -- and haven't a clue on sizing photos. I could just imagine you getting tons of photos right out of cameras to print.

My computers are PC --I see no benefit in paying a LOT more for what I have just to be Apple and use Photoshop on an Apple rather than a PC. I have used iPhoto before at a workplace and think it is an awful program. On the flipside -- I think the iPhone is superior to Android phones -- all because of the apps!

I don't have an iPhone and have no plans to get one. I also like more control over the settings than what you have with a smart phone. I'm thinking about getting a DSLR to take photos of my flowers and for an upcoming vacation. Do you have any recommendations?

glb I must seriously be the worst photographer ever, LOL. I think the pictures on my I phone 5 S are AWFUL. My flash doesn't work half the time, I have a problem finding out how to get it to turn on and off, the pictures are too dark or too bright. I'm so disappointed in my I phone camera. I didn't 'like my I phone 4 camera either--as far as picture quality, but at least the flash worked.

I NEVER use flash -- I hate it. And I never use the native camera that came on the phone.

you need to look up fine art iPhoneography -- there are a TON of awesome, artistic photos out there!

Just like with any camera -- it is the user that makes the photo -- not the equipment

When I see a lot of what amateurs post to Facebook -- whether it is with an iPhone or an SLR -- well, I see some pretty bad photos.....
