Do You Have Clothes From By Gone Eras?

I admit that I do.

I have a dress that I kept from high school, and a couple of sweaters from the 90's.

I don't know why. They no longer fit, and even if they did, they would look so out of place.

I guess I thought they were too pretty to part with.

Someday I'll have to give them up, but who would want a dress that is over 20 years old???

So, dose anybody have clothes that they've hung on to from past decades?

Of course, I have two prom dresses and my favorite mini dress, all from the 60s. Also, a sweater my grandmother knitted for me around 1964.

It is hard for me to get rid of clothes I no longer wear. What I do now is throw what I do not wear in a big trash bag, let it stay there for awhile and then take it to goodwill. I figure if I have not needed it for a long time, I do not need it anymore.

I have an antique titanic era white garden party dress.I saw it in an antique store and I couldn't stop thinking about it, went back and tried it on ...fit like it was made for me. Maybe it was mine in another life ! (:

Last year I did a much needed closet purge. It was looooong over due. I think I filled up about a dozen trash bags worth of clothes that I took to a thrift store where the proceeds go to help a local no-kill animal shelter.

My criteria was that if I hadn't worn it in a year, then out it went.

It wasn't easy parting with some of the things.

But it felt good once I had done it.

I have a tapestry vest that's at least 25 years old. I love it but haven't worn it in forever. I think we get emotionally involved with our clothing. At least I do. I'm good about weeding out things from my wardrobe every year but for some reason me and that vest are forever!

It does work! I have two bags in the garage now that gave been there all winter. I have added to them over the months. I am taking them to goodwill next week. I forget what is even in the bags, and. LOVE that my closet is only full of things I like and want.

yes, its a problem with me but I'm getting better. My friend comes over and he and I go though my closet and he helps me purge my 80s clothing. It still fits but do I wear it, no! We took a lot of my moms 60 and 70 clothing to a great vintage store here.

Knowing me, I'd start regretting one of the discards and be back out in the garage digging through the bag for it !! But, at least the items get a probation period and if I change my mind about something , I could retrieve it (:

I have a silk kimono that my grandmother had made for me in japan when I was about four. (in the 1940's)

It is beautiful with padding in the sleeves and a gorgeous obi. My japanese neighbor had it cleaned for me and she folded it properly just before she became ill. I hope one of my kids loves it as much as I. I also have my mothers wedding veil it is twenty feet long.

I have a wool winter coat from the 80's that I can't get rid of. I saw someone in her Lassie coat the other day and I envied her. Remember those from the early 70's I had both the navy and camel colors.

I have my high school prom dress (I thought it was so classy!), my cheerleading sweater which still has the stars down the sleeves denoting how many consecutive games I cheered at, and my wedding dress (have no idea why I have that - got rid of the husband!).... I also have a white blazer style jacket made of a canvas-like material that was called an "autograph jacket" back then--it's white, and most of the autographs and comments of my friends, teachers, and family are still readable-it's fun to get it out and read what was said...did anyone else ever have one of those? All from 50+ years ago--they're becoming antiques, like me!

Oh, I also have the original first skirt and top I bought from Susan Graver when she first came on QVC 24 years ago - it's hanging in the back of my closet, and I have no earthly idea why it's still there! Although I did really like the print!

I still have a few ""Mid-Century Classics"" in my wardrobe from High School. They are in a trunk along with some of my kids special outfits.

My Mom took me on a cruise a few years back and I surprised her at the formal dinner night by wearing a pair of high-heel wedge straw sandals that she had given me because she bought them on her first trip to Florida the year I was born. It was the shoes 50th Anniversary! (And they were right in style).

Oh gosh yes... I still have my Senior High Prom dress somewhere, even though I donated my Jr Prom dress ages ago. I still have my wedding dress hahaha... talk about past era, I was married in the 90's...and divorced in the 90's. Not sure why I kept the thing although it was gorgeous. I'm sure I would be surprised if I actually took inventory and remembered the age of some of my wardrobe. I have a distressed leather jacket that is 20 years old, but it's a classic style and I just can't part with it. The one item I wish I still had was a poodle-skirt that my grandma made for one of my cousins. My grandma ended up keeping it in her "play dress-up closet", and she gave it to me since I was the last of the grand kids. I remember wearing it to some middle school costume dance, and for Halloween once, then my mom must have given it away when I outgrew it. I wish we had kept it for sentimental reasons.

ETA: Oh, and I still have many of my dance recital costumes from when I started taking dance classes at 4 years old... do those count?

Vintage clothing does quite well on the bay if you don't have a local shop that will take it on consignment.

I had a couple of maxi dresses back in the day that I would LOVE to replace.....haven't seen them on the bay but I do look from time to time!
