"If you want something done, ask a busy person." Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why? Can you relax? OR on the other side, can you get going if you are used to being uber laid-back?

It seems that when I am busy I keep attacking things that need to be done, and when I complete one task (or get one issue settled), I have a waiting list of other things that need my attention -- and off I go -- I keep working. I HAVE A SNEAKING SUSPICION THAT I NEED TO LEARN TO PACE MYSELF, AS WELL AS LEARN TO RELAX.

Then there are others who are so laid back that a backlog of "needs my immediate attention" does not seem to bother them. THEY NEED TO GET GOING!

What is your experience on this matter?

It absolutely is a true statement. I'm very busy, but I'm usually willing to take on more.

It's just the way I am. Many others are the opposite.

I agree that a busy person is quicker to complete more tasks, but I might question the quality of the work depending on the complexity of the tasks.

I don't see how some take on 4 or 5 responsibilities and do none of them well -- leave much undone that should be done in a timely manner.

When I was working part-time at a college another of the adjunct staff would wait to make appointments with failing students, put off turning in curriculum etc. and take on a volunteer activity too -- and then fulfill only half of their responsibilities there. Then they would take their 3 kids out of school for the day when they felt it would be fun to sleep all morning and go to the park.

If you want something done, do it yourself or be prepared to pay another to do it for you. I've found that some people need to have lots of appointments, lots to do, to feel important while others want time to enjoy whatever the day brings them. I'm the second type so I've chosen a job that allows me to make my own schedule. Fortunately, I'm very good at what I do so I'm accommodated.

I think the statement refers to the fact that busy people tend to be go getters and organized, and will get the job done. That said, I go for the idea of not asking favors of people, but doing it yourself unless you have to delegate like in a committee or if you are a supervisor.

Busy people are busy pursuing their own things, not other people's requests. I am very busy, I do get a lot done, but resent it when other people what me to do something they can do themselves.

I've never been in a position of giving other people work, so I don't know if that saying is true. I do know that the more I have to do, the more I get done. I suppose it's a matter of being cognizant of deadlines thus trying to work as efficiently as I can. On the rare occasion when I have some "slow" time, it takes me forever to get any one little task accomplished. Go figure.

My mom's boss once said this to her. She was a hard-working, thoughtful and caring person. She got raises and they were deserved. I believe it.

I've told my wife and those close to me this for decades:

"If I want to make sure something gets done? I do it myself". That is the way I've been from my sophomore year in high school and still am to this day.

Will clarify that these are things I deem to be important to myself and to many others.

I'm looking at this a bit differently than other folks who have provided responses in that I've always carried my load in an excellent fasion at work and so developed that reputation. People eventually noticed, so bosses would ask me to do this, that and the other thing, usually in terms of huge reports, creating new databases, sharing my originally created data bases and curricula. Thing is they know I would get it done - on time - and be the comprehensive report/document required.

I firmly believe this relates to a mind-set that is either inherited or fostered or both.

Oh - I would NEVER ask another busy person to do my work, unless I knew and trusted that person to get the work done and only after having had a discussion with that person. And, only if it was crunch time with hard deadlines to meet, which was common in the job from which I just retired (worked for the military). In that job, hard deadling were quite often given with only 24 hours notice.

I think it's a true statement.

I do not think it means that someone should push their work onto others.

I volunteer for a living. I am currently working with 6 different projects and I have to be on top of all of it or my reputation will be tarnished. I work very hard to do a great job and am thorough, and efficient. It's how my brain works. The people who ask me to help know I will always follow through. It's what I do.

Interesting perspective -- I have found this only in big corporations that have cut back their staff so that fewer people are working on too many projects, or trying to help too many clients.

I replace the word, 'busy' with 'organized,' and bam - I agree with the statement. Have you ever worked on a project with an un-organized person? Mercy me.... I can't get off a project fast enough if an unorganized person is leading -- busy or not.

Yes, I have worked on a project with disorganized people ("organized challenged"!)...

I like to spend time being organized before I get to the meat of the project, and find that this way the project actually takes less time. Spending time seeing patterns or what needs to be collected before the heart of the work is underway can pay dividends down the road -- AND WASTE LESS TIME IN THE LONG RUN!

I agree with the statement. The only time I relax is when I'm sleeping. I can't sit & watch tv without being on the computer, reading, crocheting or doing something else. I have been like this my entire life and when working had a face-paced busy job.

I can see it from both sides. I work with people that appear busy for the sake of not getting any extra work. I work for one of those big corporations that does more with less. I get do tired if hearing how busy people are, but those same folks have plenty of time for chit chat and long lunches. I can appear busy, but will get more than my share done. If my boss asks me to do something, I get it done.
