Prom dresses

Have you seen some lately? Some so opulent they resemble bridal gowns and others look like something a hooker would sport with bare midriff and slit to the hip... and the prices...Some are over $1,000 ! Helping my neice find one is quite the experience.

There are styles to suit everyone. Girls seem to be choosing short ones here this year.

Macy's has some beautiful prom dresses along with Penney's at ""reasonable"" prices. DD will be getting hers this weekend.

Hey loveschocolate! I wanted to hitchhike on your comment about Macy's. Just to give them kudos once more: several years ago my dd got a prom dress there. We had to have it shortened (acorn doesn't fall far from the tree there!). Well while at the prom the whole side zipper gave out (no it wasn't too tight). I wrote to the store (don't recall if it was the store or the corp) and complained. They told me to bring the dress back for a FULL refund. I told them it had already been altered. They said ""still bring it back for a full refund"".

Can't ask for better customer service than that!

Yikes, Scottie! At least they have great customer service. We got DD's homecoming dress at Macy's too. Beautiful and we didn't have to take out a second mortgage on the house! The boutiques at the mall charge sky high prices for a dress to be worn only once. Doesn't make sense to me!

I agree. I really can't see paying those enormous prices for a prom dress. And the wedding dresses now are going completely obscene....and then the guys get to RENT their tuxes

While some girls do spend outrageous amounts of money on their prom dresses, beautiful prom dresses can be found at all price points.

My mom's dress cost $100 47 y/ago and my granddad thought that was outrageous.

I heard they are expensive. My granddaughter just had to get a gown for the school ball (not the prom but she still needed a gown). She got one on sale that was 300 reduced to 150 which was cheap. And it was gorgeous!

But my daughter told me while they were looking most prom gowns here were 500. My granddaughters ball gown could have been her prom gown but that's next year so they will be looking again then. (her school has prom in 11th AND 12th grades).

Even 40 years ago at my own proms, I knew the goal was to have fun, and was not hung up on an expensive dress. For both proms I doubt I spent $100 total. My girls graduated in the late 90's, and their prom dresses came from consigment stores; there were no appointments for hair, mani or pedi's, no tanning sessions, no fancy jewelry, no limo, etc. I just don't agree with spending so much money on prom; to me, it's just a dance.

I have written about this before. When I was in HS back in the dark ages I had a close girlfriend who went to a different school. We both dated boys a year older than us and we both went to their proms and our own - plus a junior prom and I had a formal in nursing school. We saved a fortune by sharing dresses. She was a little shorter tham me but her Mom put in a hem that she could easily let back out so we ended up , instead of each buying like 5 dresses we each only bought 3 and , actually she was in my wedding and she wore one of them as my MOH too.

That was a lot of money for a prom dress back then. I remember my sister and I paying $40-$80 for a number of gowns between 1965-1967. We bought our gowns at Bonwit Teller, Teppers, Best and Company and B Altman. None of these stores were considered cheap.

i agree with you - parents need to set limits on these things - limos etc are just ridiculous extravagant expenses. And , honestly, more mothers need to shop with their daughters - some of the dresses you see are absolutely obscene.

my daughter bought one last year at cache for about 250.00 with a discount code. that was for junior prom. this year she is trying cache and the ones she likes are around 275-350. she looked in nordstrom and everything she liked didnt fit her in the chest area. i am going to tell her to check out macys while she is back at the mall looking tomorrow. she is only look for long dresses.

i wanted her to use her sisters dress from a few years ago but of course THAT is a no-go.

I think Prom dressed are very expensive. My two grandaughter's are going and the dresses were each $500. Thats alot for one night plus they need alterations another expense. They went to Gipper's because they register the dresses so only one person from high school can wear the dress. I think it is another sales pitch to up the price. Oh well I am just the Nana !!!!!

My daughter purchased a dress that was registered. The night of the prom there were at least 3 other girls with the same dress. Gowns are not exclusive to just 1 store.
