Any Outer Banks Residents Here?

Hi, I was hoping there may be some people who live on the Outer Banks I could ask some questions. My questions are regarding grocery stores. We are heading down next week with my BIL & SIL to ready their son's house for the rental season. We will be in the Corolla area, which has two grocery stores, but during off season neither are well stocked. Are there any other areas to grocery shop if we head down towards Nags Head?

Hi, Allegheny! I don't live there, but your thread evokes such good memories! I've lived in both Winston-Salem and Asheville, and we took frequent trips over to the Outer Banks just to meander up and down the coast, inhale that wonderful sea air, chow down on the incredible food ...

It's been too long since I was there, so I don't have specific recommendations. We have several posters who live in the area or who visit the Outer Banks, so perhaps they'll see this thread and offer suggestions.

I think there a couple of Food Lion's in the Nags Head/ Kill Devil Hills area, and also a Harris Teeter in the Corolla area. But I have no clue as to their stock and hours this time of year. Best bet is to Google supermarkets in Outer Banks.

There are several Food Lions in Kitty Hawk and Nags Head.

As soon as you cross over the causeway bridge there's a SuperWalmart on the right. There's also a Harris Teeter in KDH on the right, and a little further down is a New Food Lion on the left...The OLD Food Lion is now a TJ Maxx!

Edited to add = these directions are if you are coming via Virginia (by Va. Beach) down the coast as opposed to coming from Manteo into to South Nags Head.

Food Lion was recently named one of the 10 worst grocery chains in the country, but I suppose it's better than nothing.

Have you ever shopped @ Food Lion?

I don't know where you read that, but NOT all stores in a grocery chain are bad! My nearest FL has excellent employees, it's clean, well stocked, never a long wait in line, groceries are bagged by them, the meats & produce are fresh, and I've NEVER been overcharged (cheated) by them like the other Grocery stores in my area...

I live in NC so I can only speak to the ones in my area. FL is the nearest grocery store to my house and I absolute hate it. It is dirty, has the most inept and rude employees. I have run up there several times when I just need on thing and I remind myself never to give them my money again because they have to tear themselves away from texting nearly every time I have been in there. The produce in my local Food Lion is just absolutely terrible too. I NEVER go in there to go shopping even though it is cheaper than Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and Fresh Market, I go to the ones I mentioned. Their customer service is a complete joke and I don't know anyone who can pay a little more and shop at Harris Teeter or other places that doesn't.

I can honestly say at the FL's in Raleigh, I have never had a good experience in one. The checkers have their lights on but are always wondering away and when you do get them back they give you attitude. Compared to HT, WF and FM where they always wait at the end of the line to wave you into their lane. I have never had that happen ONCE at Food Lion.

We have a house on the beach but not in the OBX but at Atlantic Beach but when we go to visit friends there we go to the Harris Teeter in KDH on Croatan Hwy. I think we have used OBX Groceries to Go too.

Thanks everyone! In Corolla there is a Teeters Harris and I believe a Food Lion which we do shop. However, when we go down during off season their selections are pretty grim. Whole sections of the stores are closed off. So we figure if we get out of Corolla there might be more stores further down that the locals shop. We'll be there for 10 days working on the house, so won't be eating out much.

They opened one near me when I was in Houston but it had such a bad reputation that I never shopped there. There were several features on the Erving news about inspection reports. I went to a new Food Lion in Myrtle Beach last year that was really nice and had a large, well stocked (and fresh) produce section.

When we are at Nags Head we always go to one of the Food Lions there and have never had any problems.
