My husband and I went several years ago and stayed a few days. We actually went home a day early because my husband wasn't feeling well and they were also expecting heavy rains so we decided to go home. To be honest, we didn't care for Tybee. The beach was massively crowded when we went and we didn't love the assortment of restaurants and things to do. We LOVE St. Simon's Island though, about an hour south of Tybee Island.

Have any of you had an opportunity to visit Tybee Island Georgia? I made a note in my atlas for some reason-may have heard it mentioned-but not sure why. It is located off the coast of Georgia-18 miles from Savannah. If you have had an opportunity to stay there would you please share your impressions. Wondering if it would be an enjoyable place to visit in May for a a few days. Thanks for sharing.

gidgetgoeshawaiian: Thanks for your response and suggestion to visit St. Simon's Island. We often use Trip Advisor so will check to see what they show as available as far as things to do and places to stay.

ucm_mom,

One of my sons has been there with his family, twice I think, I'll contact him later today and get back to you. I remember him calling and telling me about it and I think it was all favorable. I'll ask where they stayed, restaurants and attractions and when they last visited.

Edited...Sorry I had the wrong family trip in mind, only the 3 children have been to Tybee twice on retreats.

Been to both St. Simons Island and Tybee. St. Simons is a favorite. Both Simon and neighboring Jekyll islands are great for bicycle riding. We especially enjoyed the beaches at Jekyll island. Spent a week on Tybee with husband, 18 year old daughter and three of her friends. There isn't a lot to do for teens on the island so we did a lot of day trips. The teens liked Myrtle Beach much better. Tybee has a small, laid-back, 70s vibe. Tybee is close to Savannah and Hilton Head, which is a plus.

Never stayed overnight. Love the lighthouse and climbed all the way to the top. 178 steps. (Quite a feat for this old soul.) I am a "lighthouse" nut. Love them. The view from the top of the lighthouse is beautiful and I like the ride through the tidewater from Savannah to Tybee. There's a fort, I think, on the way to the island that may have tours. We didn't have the time to stop.

I wish I could give you more info.

It depends on what you are looking for in a beach town community. I love Tybee and find it very laid back, kind of a 70's vibe, as one poster mentioned. The community doesn't have high rises, lots of night life or big fancy restaurants. The beach can be busy in May but the relaxed laid back vibe is something I personally enjoy and even though its busy in the tourist season, it has a calmness that is nice. It definitely is not pretentious as I find Hilton Head to be. I love The Breakfast Club, their food is excellent and I ate there every morning. Its busy but efficient. I think its an American gem. Savannah is nearby and is a very interesting place to visit in so many ways too.

We were at Tybee several years ago, and frankly, we were not favorably impressed. The beach seemed dirty and there wasn't much to do in the area. However, Savannah is lovely and charming, with beautiful old-fashioned architecture, shopping, and restaurants. We stayed in the River Street area. Savannah would be beautiful in May with all the flowers blooming, and not terribly hot yet. I'd definitely recommend it for a short trip.

Kind of a low-key beach area near Savannah. A few nice shops, galleries, and restaurants, a lighthouse, and lots of cozy/funky beach homes and older motels. There's a fun seafood restaurant called The Crab Shack on the river as you cross over from the mainland to Tybee. Not a polished resort area, but kind of a fun/funky place to kick back and relax for a day or two. A few hours' drive from Atlanta and easy access to Savannah attractions and other Georgia islands and coastal areas.
