That is great! I wish they knew things like this when my grandmother was first diagnosed back in the 80's. It's good to see they're doing more for Alzheimer's patients.

Hopefully a new study that I read about today will force some action on increasing funding for Alzheimer's research. It said that as many as 500,000 deaths a year are due to this disease. It would be the third leading killer behind heart disease and cancer.

Right now only about 83,000 deaths a year are listed as Alzheimer's because of inaccurate death certificates. The report said Alzheimer and other dementia deaths are under-reported each year. If someone died of pneumonia that would be listed as the immediate cause but they wouldn't have gotten pneumonia if they didn't have Alzheimer's.

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. The article is on nbc dot com, under Health.

I read this too that it is the top 3rd cause of death in the U.S. I recently saw in Congress someone (celebrity me unknown) who talked about his m-i-l and what she is going through and the room was nearly empty. That's how much our congress cares about this very disease, and hope not they will have to pay the price themselves for this horrendous disease. Shame on the Congress, and I mean everybody who left the room!!!!

Magenta

Dagna: Thanks for posting this. I read a few years ago that Alzheimer patients responded to music from the era where they were younger but didn't respond to music not of their era.

I heard that on my local news this morning. That's wonderful news, especially since it's having such a positive effect on the patients.

My husband made a tape for my mother that was all her favorite music -- Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme and some of the big bands from the 40s.

My husband is in mid-stage Alzheimers and has some music background of singing/choirs. In fact, he still sings in our church choir some Sundays. I am very interested in this! Instead of mindlessly watching TV all day, I might get him an IPOD and try this out! Thanks for sharing.
