How Does An Extreme Coupon Person Save Money?

I have been watching a TV show about extreme couponing. These people have so many of the same items.

They've bought them all with coupons. They always say on the show that they are saving to do things. For instance, one lady was saving money for a diamond ring. Another lady was saving money for a new roof.

They don't sell the items. The items are just stored on the shelves. I don't understand how they have 'saved' money for things because they can't possibly use all of the items they show on TV.

I think I must be missing something. Does anyone understand how they are saving money FOR something in particular?

I understand that some see it as hording. I am not judging. A lot of people might say I was a hoarder for different reasons.

I keep thinking I must be missing something or all of these people wouldn't think they were saving money to purchase something.

Any ideas?

My niece does this. I've seen her get a cart full of groceries and other household items (paper products, cleaning stuff, diapers, wipes, etc) for under $20 after her coupons.

I don't know all the ins and outs, but I know she prints coupons online, has them on her smart phone and goes to a grocery store that doubles coupons on Wednesdays.

I don't think they literally do save money unless they are selling a lot of the excessive amounts of stuff they purchase.

By the time they buy all those newspapers, drive around stealing other peoples' newspapers, pay into programs for this sort of thing, buy ink and paper for all the printing, and waste a lot of what they buy, etc, it's hard to imagine the savings. Plus, it's practically a full-time job. You'd do better to just get a real job, than making extreme coupon-saving your job, IMO.

I don't know about couponing for trips etc. And I don't now about stealing coupons. But when you combine store specials with double coupons and so forth you can stock up on items. Every week something different is on sale. For example this week tooth paste, next week paper towels. Getting those items for a few cents on the dollar can really help a budget strapped for one reason or another.

I think that they sell them, but if they said that, they would be hearing from the tax man. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense.

When I see these extreme couponers, I really think some of them have mental problems. Some of the shows I have watched these people just aren't right.

Yeah - ha! Having to add a room to your house would probably negate at least 20 years worth of coupon savings!

Or, you use the garage and your car sits outside and ages about 10 times as fast.

I've seen shows where the people were also using their kids' rooms to store the stuff. It's like a hoarding disease with some of those folks.

Well, I have never actually watched the show, but I feel I need to add that my niece is not that extreme. She uses most of what she gets and if she can't use it, she shares with family.

yes, that's how normal coupon users do it.

I saw one lady on the show get 600 free candy bars. Why?

My oldest daughter and one of my nieces are extreme couponers. In the case of my daughter who works full time and is has gone back to school full time to get her masters, she won't need to grocery shopping for several months especially on her non perishable items. She loves turkey and regular bacon, cheddar cheese and assorted frozen vegetables. She bought a deep freezer so she freezes what she likes.

My niece is a military wife with two starving teenage boys, she stocks up on cereal because they can go through a box a day. She's not a hoarder and her items get used and not stored on a shelf.

betteb...have you seen the shows where they have huge rooms dedicated to all the stuff they have? If you have a huge family it(extreme couponing) might work.

I don't know about the extreme people who border on hoarding, but the impression I get from your regular coupon cutter is - let's say your grocery bill would have been $250, but you used a bunch of coupons and it was only $230, you saved $20 and stash that away. I don't know about the extreme people because how are you saving money if you would not have bought it in the first place.

No I haven't croemer. That sounds a little bit over the edge to me, more like a hoarder. I've seen an episode or two of that show

I think she got started when her hubby was working and she was going to school. No she continues. They both work now and have 2 small children, so I'm sure every little bit helps.

Yes! Some of these rooms they have look like actual stores with 100 hand sanitizers, 100 tubes of toothpaste, etc..

I don't use coupons, but that's how I feel when I give the cashier my store card and she says, "You've saved $20 today." Woo-hoo!

I have seen some of these extreme coupon shows, where they actually donated the food to a food bank, and to homeless shelters.

I hardly ever watch this. It gets old fast but I think the people who donate items are appropriate. I think the people who store more stuff than they could ever use is crazy. Most of that stuff, like soaps etc. will eventually go bad. I look at that as hoarding.
