House Hunters International tonight !

Bruges, Belgium !

My favorite place after the US. It's so neat to see places that I recognize and the memories and happy times they evoke... the skyline, roofs, shops, canals, colorful structures. I just hope they don't mind all the rain. The people, beer and chocolate make up for that tho.

Yes, for almost 3 years.

We lived in both Bruges and Brussels.

Bruges is one beautiful city. I love Belgium. I feel the same way when they show something about Byron Bay, Australia on tv because it isn't a big international city that you see all the time on television.

I lived in Leuven, Belgium one summer. Loved it. Visited Bruges only once, though. Spent more time in Brussels and Leuven. My hair did not like the rain.

I am envious. We loved Bruges. Actually Belgium was such a pleasant surprised. It was an "included" country (as was Luxemburg) on a tour of the Netherlands and France. We enjoyed those two countries every bit as much as the featured countries.

I love HOuse Hunters Int'l but missed this particular episode.....how lucky you were to be able to live in Belgium!!

Why wouldn't you have chosen that one. It was within their budget and close to his work. The first one was $300 over budget and the second one had only one bedroom with the toilet on a separate floor from the bedroom and rest of the bathroom. It seemed the only choice to me.

Have you ever been to Bruges? Living in a nearby town would not have been the same. The husband had to commute, no doubt by car, wherever they lived. In city center the wife would not need a car and would be more likely to find a job. In the suburbs in all probability she'd need transportation if she were able to find a job.

There are stranger things than having a separate toilet. Who knows, it could be more convenient. The location alone would be worth the inconvenience. Guests could stay in a nearby hotel.

I must admit that I am fascinated by those who have an attachment to Belgium. A few years ago, I wrote a feature about a high-level, now-retired individual in my government agency. During his impressive career, he had been assigned to top posts in Italy, Germany and Belgium. Because he was an Italian American, I thought perhaps his Rome assignment would have been his favorite. No, he and his wife loved their Belgian experience so much that he asked to re-assigned there at another time in his life. I've never been there -- must go.

There's nothing like living in the city close to everything. Walking, biking is the norm and most young people don't have a car and use the train. Brussels is about an hour away, Leuven is nearby and the entire of Belgium is central to the rest of Europe and GB.

Since most Belgians speak English it's a great place for Americans to visit and relocate.

Unless one opts for an American-style apartment, or house, European homes all have quirks: bathrooms off the kitchen or lounge with the bedrooms on the opposite side or a toilet located off the front door and a shower wherever it fits. With all of the cafes, bars no one really stays home and veges like Americans do and if they do entertain at home their friends homes are the same and no one really cares if they pee 5 feet from the kitchen.

I don't watch HH International especially if they are going to France or Italy. I prefer Beachfront Bargains. It's my new obsession on Sundays.

Lila, Leuven is a little further away from Bruges than Brussels is. Not super far - a little over an hour, but not nearby. :-)

I've never been there but from what I saw on HH it didn't appeal to me. I didn't get the impression that working was on her agenda. She seemed to just want to accumulate friends and experience the culture. Those two were an odd match as in day and night.
