IF you're interested in History and scenic beauty I have a couple of suggestions:

It isn't a long trip to get to Johnstown, the site of the horrendous flood 125 years ago. You can visit the site of the lake and dam at the Johnstown Flood National Memorial and get the overview of the tragedy on a huge diorama plus view the remains of the South Fork Dam.

http://www.nps.gov/jofl/index.htm

Then go to the city of Johnstown itself. There is a Flood Museum there.

In Johnstown you can ride the Steepest Incline Plane in the world to the top of the surrounding hill for an amazing overview of the whole area in real life. (If that's too scary, you can drive to the top up the back of the hill also), but the incline ride is wonderful.

It is a powerful experience. There is a nice restaurant at the top where you can eat lunch overlooking the whole area.

http://www.inclinedplane.org/

Not far to the Northeast of Johnstown is The Allegheny Portage Railroad Historic Site which, if either of you are Railroad enthusiasts, is a must. Again very scenic area.

http://www.nps.gov/alpo/index.htm

The Flight 93 Memorial Site (9/11) is just south of Johnstown, too. When I went there was nothing there yet but I think they have developed the site now.

If you are Senior Citizens, one of you should get a National Park Senior Pass for $10 which gets both of you into all National Parks and SItes FREE for life. You can just buy it at the first National Park or site you go to. No need to pay the extra $10 to get it in the mail.

$10 Lifetime pass

For U.S. citizens or permanent residents age 62 or over.

May be obtained in person at a ||federal recreation site or through the mail using this ||application form. The cost of obtaining a Senior Pass through the mail is twenty dollars ($20). Ten ($10) for the Senior Pass and ten ($10) for processing the application. Applicants must provide documentation of age and residency or citizenship.
