Does anyone know anything about Amway?

My college-age son just told me that he invested money as a seller for Amway. I had never heard of the company, so when he told me he was thinking about investing, I told him to be careful. Now he told me he has already done it. He wants to make some money while going to school.

I want to support him, so I went to the site to see what I could purchase. They sell laundry products, cosmetics, nutrition products and a few other product categories. To my surprise, they don't sell any brand names that I am familiar with. For instance, their line of skincare is called Artistry and their laundry products are called Legacy of Clean. Plus their prices seem high. I am hesitant to buy any of these products but I want to support my son.

Does anyone know anything about Amway? Was it a bad decision on his part to invest his money, which he says was only $150. He also claims they reimburse the money if he doesn't sell enough. What should I do, if anything?

I'm sure others may know more than I, but 30 years ago, my former husband was sure we were going to get rich selling Amway lol. There are people who are making good money, but they are the ones who have recruited many others to join and are making $$ on their sales (think pyramid). If your son has only invested $150, hopefully he will discover if this is or isn't for him before he invests more. On the plus side, most of their products are of high quality, so don't hesitate to buy some to show your support...

yep and I went to one when I was about his age too. I didn't sign up though. Guess the pyramid is still GROWING.

I bought Amway products regularly many years ago, and particularly liked the laundry and cleaning products. I felt the quality was worth the price then, but I might question that now with all that's available. I agree with Amway being a pyramid setup, as this seems to be the only way to draw people into these sales schemes.

it is along the same lines as the CUTCO KNIVES......they usually try to recruit college and/or high school students......i do like the CUTCO products though.

I would not want to be involved with Amway.....know someone who sold it several years ago and she didn't like the tactics she was told to use to sell it.

One of the original Multi Level Marketing companies- I cannot imagine that someone has never heard of them- or perhaps they are only in certain parts of the country?

and when you say "invest", doesn't he just have to buy samples or the product he will be selling? Or is there an actual unsecured investment?

I'm surprised there is anyone who has never heard of Amway! It's the granddaddy of all MLM pyramid schemes. Good products but high prices, imo. You don't make money selling the product. You make money if you can sign up enough people for your downline who in turn sell product and sign up people.

Many years ago 'everybody and their mothers' were into Amway. I do recall the products were high-quality. I attended a couple of meetings and didn't join. But it seemed like fun, the meetings and all. Good way to meet people. Something similar to Avon? I'm guessing.

my parents sold Amway in the 70's... they didn't get rich, but they didn't stick with it either. I personally use their cleaners -- bathroom, kitchen and laundry. they are excellent products.

Buy some of his products. I doubt he'll be able to sell many of them.

Multi Level Marketing plan, takes a lot of time to build a network and you can make money from the report who you recruit and so on and so forth

Tell your son to cut his losses and get out of this NOW. It's multi-level-marketing and just barely legal; more like a pyramid scheme which IS illegal. Even if he loses money by backing out now, it'll prevent him from incurring even more losses later.

That's exactly what Amway is counting on; that's how they reap profits out of trusting but uninformed salespeople.

ITA. you will never make any decent money selling the products. they are always pushing their sales people to recruit more sales people. it is just a huge pyramid scam. I am surprised that they are still in business.

I agree with those who have already posted. He should have asked himself why would people buy these products when they can get equal or better quality in grocery stores and box stores? There is nothing unique about them nor are they priced lower than other comparable products.

It's like Girl Scout cookies, the reason people buy those is because they want to support the girls selling them. Maybe if your son has lots of relatives who will buy to help him out he'll make a small profit.
