Well, I have not read the book, but the title is pretty clear.

I would not say that it does not exist, but I would venture to say that it may be over diagnosed.

I agree with that. I would say ADHD is the "disease du jour."

"Disease du jour" - good terminology for that. Just like "dysfunctional family" in the 80s, & "your erroneous zones" in the 70s.

I agree with this - back in the 90's when a child was disruptive in class, the problems were diagnosed too readily as being ADHD.

But their are children AND adults with this disorder and it does exist.

It exists, but I still think it's loosely over-diagnosed. My opinion, of course.

It is like fibromyalgia. The doctor give this name to symptoms with no known cause. It satisfies the patient to be given a name to their discomfort. Many illnesses are given names. Disorders with no known reason or cure.

It seems that every child that doesn't fit the ""norm"" is diagnosed with ADHD and worse.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia are serious problems that do exist and is widely talked about. With these to ailments, a Doctor has to treat the symptoms just like in Lupus - no cure there either.

I agree with this. While the symptoms vary with both, there are some common denominators that prove the disorders.

ITA.........The first time I ever heard of fibromyalgia was on these boards. So, I guess the only treatment for the symptoms would be - sleeping pills, anti-depressants, pain meds., etc.... No thanks - I don't think I'll have any of that......

According to the Mayo Clinic site, this "affliction" affects women more than men. I wonder why that is.....

fibromyalgia has varying symptoms, such as, bladder problems, migraines, sinus problems, tooth problems, IBS, Tinnitus, bloating, numbness other than the pain in joints, anxiety, depression and chronic fatigue.

The pharmaceutical companies are making millions off of the drugs used to treat these conditions. The doctors sometimes falsely diagnose just to get parents off their backs. It is ridiculous to put all these kids on drugs.

It does exist, but it is overdiagnosed and some of the medications to treat are horrendously inappropriate, i.e., ant-psychotics. I believe this doctor does imagery and mapping of the brain/MRI to detect issues. A diagnosis of add/adhd should be thorough and done by a multidisciplinary team - neurologist, psychiatrist, teacher, social worker, and parents.

Not to mention what it does to these kids later on in their lives who take the drugs and don't really need them at all.
