Need help with my kitty

We have 2 kitties. We had to take one to the emergency vet this morning. He had an abscess . He has to take antibiotics and they sent him home with a cone around his neck to keep from licking the wound. His brother was very upset and when we brought Oscar home and Max saw that cone he got real scared. He is actually hiding and will not come out. When my husband went to get him he started hissing and growling at him. We are worried about him . I can't imagine why he is so scared. Any advice will help.

sounds like he does not like the smell of the vet's office on the kitty.

Whenever I have to take just one to the vet, as soon as we get home, I wipe them all down with pet wipes or a damp washcloth with a little scented non toxic oil, that way they all have a similar smell. I have read that they don't like the scent from the vet as Doxie said.

Wipe the kitty that stayed home with a cotton cloth and then use that to go ovr the other kitty after you wipe him/her down with wipes.

Maybe that would work

I hope it works. The vet's office smell is strong. Let us know how it works and check back because there are cat specialists that check in.

I wiped them both ....at least Max came out and let me pet him but when Oscar came down he still hissed at him. I think I am going to have to separate them for tonight. Max will stay downstairs and Oscar upstairs. I don't think we are going to get much sleep tonight. Oscar is by the door meowing for his brother. He doesn't understand why he doesn't want him around.

He'll come around. I'd leave him alone tonight and give him his space. When I want my cat to come, I sit on the living room floor with his favorite things - toy mice and brush. That always gets Rick to come.

Interestingly, I had a Himalayan who had to be shaved for medical reasons. Her daughter hissed at her and every time we tried to touch her she hissed at us. She had always loved and slept with her mother but after that she seemed to dislike her very much, as if something was wrong with her. Vet told us as soon as her hair grew out her daughter would like her. Never did. The daughter never warmed up to us again until after her mother died 2 years later. I tried everything the vet recommended, all to no avail. I hope your case is not as dire as mine. My husband came to dislike the daughter for being mean to her mother. I understood there was some kind of psychological problem and tried to work with it. My husband just kind of threw up his hands and snuggled with the mommy.

It is the craziest thing.. I think Max thinks we took his brother and brought home another cat. He seemed afraid of Oscar with that cone around him. Max hid downstairs and wouldn't even eat for almost 2 days. My son watches TV down there and he always ran away when he tried to pick him up but he came out and started to be real loveable to him.

Oscar went downstairs today and Max hissed a little but he seems to be afraid of him. He is coming around a little though. I did wipe Oscar down and we took the cone off Oscar and let Max see him without it for awhile. Cats are very strange animals. They were very close. I hope things don't change.. I think Max blames my husband for taking Oscar away.

Jessa, I wish you every success, but if they do not ever warm to one another, just be happy they warm to you or members of your family. They don't have to like one another to live in the same house. Just love them as individuals. I bet it works out, however.

Thanks namealreadytaken, It seems Max is starting to warm up to Oscar today, we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Hi Jessa, I've been out of town working and haven't been able to read Pet Lovers. I just saw your thread and am glad Oscar is doing well and Max is getting back to normal.

Thank you silver lining and all you nice ladies for your help. Things are going well...Max finally went up to Oscar and gave him a kiss....I guess the cone really had him scared. Cats are really strange little creatures aren't they?
