I used to get Fresh Step. It clumps well but the dust is awful!!

The last few months I've tried Nature's Miracle Just for Cats Corn Cob Cat Litter (smells like pine, took awhile for the kitties to adjust, didn't clump well or contain urine odor), Nature's Miracle Intense Defense Clumping Litter (good stuff, kitties took to it immediately and it did a good job...no dust, good clump, good odor control...but since it isn't amazon prime anymore, the shipping is killer!) and now I've switched to Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter. It's great! Like the Intense Defense...kitties took to it right away, no dust, good clump, good odor control, almost no tracking.

Neither I nor DH ever "did litterboxes" until our latest cat, which we got from the pound. With an orchard and coyotes behind our property, we don't want to set him up, so the box is in the basement, which works out well for everyone.

He's all about that box and loves his litter. If he's happy, we're happy, and I don't want to ruin a good thing. But the dust (Fresh Step) is all over the place, and I worry about his inhaling it.

Anyway, the past two times I noticed that there was virtually no dust in two bags of FS. I thought they might have changed their formula, but the bags were exactly the same. Last week, though, it was back to the same old dust.

I'm wondering why, if they can produce virtually dust-free litter at all, why they can't always.

We have 5 cats and I use the tidy cats litter box system called breeze. Works very well. There's no litter on the floor, seldom need to change the pellets and only change pads once a week. We have 3 boxes in the house. Very seldom an odor. It was hard for me, not the cats, to try a new system, but I am glad I did.

Fresh Step is horrible for dust. I really like Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat (as esmeralda suggested above). However, the 40 lb. bags are almost impossible to carry. Lately I've been using Cat's Pride Fresh and Light which is easy to carry and hardly has any dust.

Someone mentioned the Fresh and Light on another board. I might try that, either mixing it with the Fresh Step for a gradual transition or setting out two boxes initially.

It's just that I got so excited when, in two consecutive bags, I found the larger pellets and no dust. To me, that means it can be done.

Thanks for your responses!

Feline Pine is the best litter I've ever used. It is made from sawdust and turns back into sawdust when wet, but there really isn't any dust flying around as there is with clay litter. It also has no smell and no chemicals.

I use Fresh Step, too, and HATE the dust. I agree, it is not consistently dusty. I actually mix it half and half with a grocery store brand cheap clay litter. I don't use clumping litter, because I don't want big urine clumps in my household garbage cans. Fresh Step is the only litter I've found that kills urine stink. Guess I've just gotta live with the dust. *sigh*

On 2/14/2014 Moonlady said:
Someone mentioned the Fresh and Light on another board. To me, that means it can be done.

Thanks for your responses!

Moonlady, the way I transitioned mine from Fresh Step to the corn cob litter (which smelled like pine and I later quit using) was I put the new litter in the box and sprinkled a thin layer of clean Fresh Step over it. Before I added the Fresh Step they walked up to the box and sniffed around but didn't get in. Gradually, with the scooping, the old mixed in with the new. I'd add a little more Fresh Step...not even enough to cover the surface. Just enough to make them feel a little "at home" until they adjusted to the new stuff. It took maybe a week.

As I posted earlier, the corn cob didn't work out. When I went to the second and now the one I'm currently using, there was no transition. I dumped the old, washed the box and put the new stuff in.

I read in a review at amazon that the pine smell isn't good for cats. I don't know if anyone here has an opinion. Now that I think of it, maybe that's why I had to add some of the Fresh Step to that litter when I started using it...the drastic change in scents.

(edited)

I just recently tried the new Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal litter. My cat & I love it! There's no dust & no tracking like there was in the other Arm & Hammer product I was using. My cat started using the new stuff immediately & hasn't used the other litter box since! It's a great product!

Worlds Best Kitty litter is pretty good litter, minimal dust. I used it for years, lost Missy over a year ago, now have a dog. Some day will add a kitty again.
