His drinking and most recent DUI was just too much I guess.... he is getting down to the bottom of the barrel now.... hopefully the only way will be up from there to save his life.

Agreed. I hope that he can conquer his demons, and get and stay sober. It isn't easy.

He is responsible for his own choices/actions...nobody else. He has freewill just like we all do...he could have chosen to NOT drink or do drugs or get behind the wheel drunk...no one else makes us commit crimes...become a alcholic/drug addict. We CHOOSE of our own free will to do this or not.

Maybe she's leaving because of his drinking problem. Whatever. I could care less. He has money and he has access. If he he wants help, he'll get it. If not, so be it. I guess I'm missing the "sad" part.

Addiction isn't so black & white.

Yes, a person chooses to have that FIRST drink, but when the demon takes over, it controls you.

Maybe his wife had had enough.

Maybe she said, "Either you get help, or else we're through."

People forget that when someone is addicted, it doesn't just affect the person with the addiction, it also affects those around them, too.

Maybe his wife felt as though she had to save herself.

As I said, I hope that David gets the help that he so desperately needs.

I was married to an alcoholic, he blamed me all the time for HIS DRINKING.. guess what, it wasn't me after all.. we divorced, he kept drinking, he drank himself into a grave.

I am see where his wife would leave, could be she had had it with him & gave up trying. I understand.

That is wrong. NO ONE is to blame for a person's reason to drink themself into the grave! An alcoholic is always blaming the world for their problems and they need to look inside themselves FIRST before they can ever heal.

No one is responsible for another person's drinking or drugging. I lived in a similar situation for years and finally had the courage to step out of the relationship. I kept hoping he would get better but he never did. I really don't know how he is doing now as he moved from the area. I do know he is struggling financially. He ruined his life and has difficulty finding and holding a job. For me the transition gets lonely but I always have to remember that I was in love with the fantasy of how I wanted things to be and how they really were. Valentines day and other holidays are difficult. Coming to the conclusion that he loved the drug life and not me is also difficult. Good for her in filing for divorce. David needs a wake-up call. He can go to any rehab over and over if he wanted to whereas most people cannot afford that. I would say that David is unwilling to change so that is why he is still in trouble.

I guess this issue touches me, as I feel in my heart if I had not become a part of my DH's life 33 years ago... he may be in the same situation as David. It had been a battle up and down over the 33 years of marriage for me... love is strong and fierce thank-goodness It has been positive for us thus far. My husband decided that WE were more important than drink. He made that life saving decision.
