What would you do?

You walk into the restroom/bathroom to find the previous person exited and left the toilet overflowing.....

Would you clean it up even though it was not your fault?

Would it make you angry that the person didn't have the decency to clean it up for the next person?

What if there is no mop nearby?

NO WAY would I clean up a toilet mess left by strangers!! Good God, who knows what you could catch!!! Report it to a manager, or someone in charge and let THEM handle it.

Now if it was in someone's home, I'd handle it differently.

You didn't specify if this was in a home, office, business, etc.

Well, this actually happened at my workplace (we are a small office/company that doesn't have full time maintenance to go behind the employees to clean up after them)......I understand many lack responsibilty or believe "It's not my job"....but there still should be some accountability which appears to be lacking in the person who left a toilet flowing over and almost 1 inch of water on the floor for the next person to discover/clean up.

Unless you're employed as a custodian and it is in your job description that you are responsible for cleaning up overflowing toilets....then NO. I'll clean up any overflowing toilet in my own home, but I'm not cleaning up a toilet where I work. NO WAY. Who owns the building?

When I worked at the hospital, these types of things happened all the time. The hallway where I worked, had a bathroom used by 20 people a day, and you never knew what to expect when you opened the door. The float valve would stick, so you often had to manually raise the float and stop the water from running. Plunging was a frequent necessity, and if you flushed and heard the toilet "gurgle", you best be calling maintenance because it was a sign the sewer was getting ready to back up. As employees, we were asked to use the plunger if necessary, report anything out of the ordinary immediately to maintenance or housekeeping, and put an Out of Order sign on the door, but we were never expected to clean anything up.

If you know who left it that way I'd say something to that person directly. Something non confrontational like " Hey, Susan, I'm sure you didn't realize it, but you left the stall in the ladies room overflowing and it's a real mess in there right now. I'll help you find a mop so you can clean it up".

This happened at my workplace too, several times. If I was the one noticing it, I went to the Office Manager and let her know. It was her job to call in the cleaning people to take care of it. One time, I actually saw the person quickly walking out when I was walking in. I never thought the same of that person again, although I did not report her.

If it had ever happened to me (which fortunately it never did) I would have immediately done the same thing, informed the Office Manager that the toilet was not working, overflowing, or whatever. It is not the person's fault if the toilets are not working properly, which is why I could not understand why someone would just walk away and leave the mess for someone else.

I would probably do something very mature like YELL "EWWW, GROSS!" and hope someone came to my rescue.

Maybe that is why I don't work?

No way would I clean it up. I would look for a sales associate, server or whatever applies and let them know. I could not ignore the flood.

btw: really Karppy of that person...they could report it without say they were the guilty party.

Isn't it possible the person didn't know the toilet was going to overflow?

She might not have realized it was still running when she left the room, or was mentally preoccupied with some issue and didn't pick up on the sound of the toilet continuing to run.

I've had an overflow at home that I didn't realize was happening, not because I ignored it and walked away.

Thanks for the replies......the office manager is out of the office today....she is the type of perosn who would clean it up...she constantly cleans up after these lazy girls we work with...not one of them can take a second to hang a roll or paper towel, or put out a new roll of toilet paper for the next perosn, or put out a new stack of paper plates, forks, knives, etc....they never wipe up their spilled food in the mocrowave....and for me to even think one of them would take the time to prevent or report an overflowing toilet was just silly of me.....I know better than to expect one of them to do anything that might make this little office run smoother or make it easier for the next perosn to ocme behind them.

LOL that was what Howard Stern was going to do until the person caved and confessed after he said he was going to send it for DNA testing and fire the person. It was absolutely discusting gross blow out all over the walls etc!
