As a most of my life resident of the Chicago area, I was inclined to laugh off the situation with the weather in the Atlanta area.

Couple inches of snow here is not much. I realize the south is not used to the same conditions.

When I saw all the ice, I stopped laughing. Ice is the worst driving condition in my opinion.

If I were a resident there, I would be pretty disgusted with the "officials" in charge of road safety, etc. It's not as if this wasn't predicted ahead of time.

Perhaps they need to study and implement a contingency plan for having some salt and bad weather equipment for just this sort of thing.

Do it before next winter!

Hyacinth

Even with chains, ice is very dicey to drive upon.

Here, they send out the dump trucks with sand . . . with the bed tilted up and I guess the back open just a little . . . and mainly treat the overpasses.

These days with the roads and highways . . . it gets to the point that a major thoroughfare can be 90% overpasses . . . one after another after another and so on and so on for miles and miles. Any melting from traffic only re-freezes even slicker than before.

We are finally thawing out- we are out in the county and the roads in our subdivision are still slick but drivable. We ventured to the store, our neighbor had his Yukon towed back into his driveway (it slipped down his hill), our other neighbor has his abandoned Mercedes back home, and our Governor has accepted full responsibility.. We will vote for him again.. it happened, kids are safe, most of the abandoned cars are off our interstates & side roads.. this could happen anywhere, will be so happy when the media stops showing it all over tv & us again the laughing stock.

Hyacinth, You wouldn't laugh if you had NO studded snow tires, No all weather tires, chains or snow removal equipment. The stores are not equipped to sell those items. Will be buying chains for the truck online for next time. We live on top of a mountain on a narrow curvy road with a cliff on one side. This is the second time the inhabitants had been homebound. We have a 4 wheel drive diesel Ford truck and finally made it down this afternoon. Scary. Originally from the Pacific Northwest where we had appropriate snow shoes for vehicles.

I saw the Guv of Georgia.

He said the National Weather Service didn't predict it correctly.

Al Roker set him straight...and the Weather Channel guys...they DID have warning.

The interstate is the responsibility of the state. We had the same situation in Buffalo NY a few years ago, and we are used to bad weather. Semis jack knifed on the I90 and traffic was backed up for over a day. No one could go forward and they couldn't drive to the other side of the road...there were cement obstructions and/or big ditches.

After that fiasco, we now have electronic gates and post state troopers to keep people from getting on the Thruway.

I doubt they had that plan in GA. It looked like the whole state was on the main road! Thousands of cars stranded!

Well, they may need to invest in more salt trucks through the DOT. First and foremost, drivers have to know their limitations and NOT go out in such conditions if they aren't able to navigate in it.

For about the 4th time, had everyone NOT left downtown Atlanta at the same time headed for different points and had the tractor trailers Heeded to chaining up, traffic would've flowed better- the salt trucks & such couldn't get to them with all the jam ups... you can't put blame on the people, it was a lot of things that caused the whole thing.. We sat in it about a mile from our house, I don't blame the state or our Governor for that- had the schools been let out for the whole day lots would've taken care of it's self..

I live east of Atlanta, and I didn't get out until this afternoon, but I really don't blame the government all that much. I really don't.

People were warned that this was coming, and they went merrily off to work, to shop, sent the kids to school and so on, and they just ignored the whole thing. As soon as it started snowing, businesses should have shut their doors and sent the employees home.

If I were to blame anyone, it would be the weather morons who wiped entire regions of Georgia off the threat list, and darn, they were unbelievably wrong.

Atlanta will NEVER be fully prepared for this type of event because it only happens once every few years.
