You really seem to be looking down your nose at the hairstyling profession. Your suggestion of the stylist owing the client a tip is tacky and insulting. How quickly one forgets when the stylist came in early or stayed late, to accommodate them, or shaved a little off the bill as a kindness. Or when they wept with the client who was going through chemo and asked for their head to be shaved. Or when they have lent a listening ear to the client who is struggling with one thing or another but then have to be perky and welcoming to the next person who sits in their chair.

I’m saying a stylist should be able to charge according to their level of expertise. A beginner should not make the same as a master stylist. I doubt any stylist anywhere consistently makes $100/hr. every time they work unless they are at a very hoyty-toyty salon in a big metropolitan area. My daughter is a master stylist. She can have back to back colors all day one day and just a few haircuts the next while hoping a good walk-in shows up. Or she could have someone in her book and they cancel at the last minute and have to reschedule.

The two professions, nursing and hairstyling, cannot be compared apples to apples or oranges to oranges when it comes to wages. A nurse is paid an hourly rate and the paycheck is calculated (minus withholding) for the hours clocked during the pay period regardless if he/she has a low or high census on any given day. A hairstylist has no guaranteed income for just showing up. He/she charges by the service performed whether it’s a child’s haircut or a long hair specialty color with toner, conditioning treatment, cut, blow dry, style, eyebrows, etc. A simple haircut could cost $35 and they are done in 20 minutes. If they have no other clients in the remaining 40 minutes, that means they only made $35/hr. If it’s a slow day with no other appointments for a couple hours, then the stylist only made $17.50/hr. Or that big service could be the only client all day so a $240 service in a 6 hour shift comes down to $40/hr. Walk-in clients are shared among all the stylists in rotation and it all luck. One stylist may get a walk-in haircut and someone else may get a walk-in color. And, keep in mind, the hairstylist doesn’t keep the entire amount of the charge for any service. The shop (or shop owner) gets a portion of that service so the stylist’s actual income is about 50-60% of what I just calculated and they still have to pay their taxes out of that.

yes! i feel like i should definetly tip.. or i would feel bad. i have had the same hairdresser for about 5 yrs.. i went to the same salon for over 20.. the girl i go to left the salon and now does hair at her house. and she's much cheaper now than the salon.. she charged me at least 50.00 less for my color.. but im glad because now she gets all the money.. and i did tip her well, i tipped at the salon too, but now she gets everything which i love.. so yes it is kinda expected to tip.. at leasr 20 to 25 % or more if you'd like... i tip my nail girl well too... it shows appreciation. for christmas i plan to give her a gift to show appreciation

Absolutely, tip. I tip 20-25% to my hair dresser who rents her chair. Looking for an "excuse" not to tip for good service is simply not fair. In this culture, tips are customary at hair salons.

Came back to add: If you think that you got poor service at a salon, then don't tip. And ...... never return to that salon. Otherwise, leave the customary 20% tip or do your own hair.

I had the most wonderful salon owner and hair stylist. Delightful human, talented and saloon owner. I gave him a well-deserved tip always. Then heard you shouldn't tip the owner.

So next time I tipped him I asked him if he was offended because he was the owner. He stepped back, looked at me and then just laughed and said "Honey! I am NEVER offended by money!" It was a joke then and we always laughed about it.

I sure do miss him, and so does my hair.

Yes, I do tip the hairstylist because they are considered self-employed and have to pay the full 15% of social security for their income. They do not have an employer who pays half of the social security.
