IRS Error

I have to pay estimated IRS taxes during the year. I went online and paid the tax to be taken from my checking account. I got a notice that the account didn't have enough in it. They took it from the wrong account and after talking to the bank it's the fault of the IRS. Has anyone had this happen to them? I usually write a check but thought I would do it online, the first time I did. Figured it would be safer than going through the mail. Guess I'll just pay by credit card since the IRS will probably do the same thing again. Now to call them and hopefully set it straight.

I use my Amex card to pay the IRS as I get points on the card.

How would they know the incorrect account number of the account where they tried to withdraw funds from unless it was provided by you?

@kismet Did you make a copy or printed out the page BEFORE you hit the "send" button? You may have typed the wrong account number.

It is extremely rare the IRS makes mistakes.

@kismet Ugh! So, I don't know all the details here but ... our dealings with the IRS!!!! What a nightmare over like 3 or 4 years! So, so wrong. I am getting a headache even thinking of it!!! I am having flashbacks!! 🙈 I hope everything works out ok for you!!

I got a letter today from the IRS that there's not enough in the account. Called the bank and for some reason the routing number is the same for several accounts. I did put the checking account in and they took it from savings. No didn't take any photos but will from now on.

The routing number would be the exact same for any and all accounts from the same bank. Unless your accounts are one digit off and that digit was entered off incorrectly, the error has to be the bank's. The IRS wouldn't have that savings account number.

@kismet Have been paying estimated tax on line for years. Never had a problem. Agree with others, make sure the IRS has the correct account number. AND, make and keep a copy of the form you fill out when setting up the estimated tax on line

@kismet The routing number is just that. It identifies the bank, not the account. The routing number for a bank is the same for all accounts. It's the account number that identifies your individual account.

How do you pay estimated taxes online? My CPA has always given me coupons to send in with checks. I didn't know you could pay them online except through IDme (I think), which I've never set up.

@Ainhisg , I authorized my CPA to pay mine quarterly which relieves me from having to remember to do it.

irs.gov/payments

you don't have to have an account set up just follow the instructions-you'll see estimated tax as one of the choices.

Your state has it's own so I guess just look that up in your search bar-make sure it has the https in front.

Or you can call your state revenue (tax) number and ask.

Independent contractors don't receive a paycheck from an employer with withholdings taken out. Being self employed they receive the full amount for their work and are required to pay the taxes themselves. The estimated tax payments are usually done quarterly.
