Macy’s Herald Square Sign Removal

If you’ve visited or shopped at Macy’s Herald Square over the past 60 years perhaps you remember the giant signage known as "The Shopping Bag". It's right at the corner of Broadway and 34th Street.

It's coming down this weekend! Macy’s says it will be replaced with something new and updated. I might go up and check out the progress and status.

Interestingly, Macy's doesn't own the 5 story building below the sign. It leases the space above.

Macy's built its Herald Square location around the existing structure!

The red shopping bag sure stands out. I'm very curious what will replace it. Maybe the red will go away too?

I am glad to read they are just redoing it instead of it coming down because it is closing.

Yes, I was in the store during the holidays a few years ago. We asked specifically for "Miracle on 34th" merchandise and no one had a clue what we were talking about.

The flagship property is valued at between $1-3 Billion.

Good to know. I may get back to that area in the next year.

So many long time stores have closed. My family loved shopping at Hudson Bay Company in Montreal. I believe it was close in size to Macys in NYC.

Anyway, that store closed last year.

I haven't been to Macy's in about 20 years, and I live in Manhattan.

(My father worked there in the late 30's ... early 40s.)

I wish they wouldn't change it . It's so iconic I've loved it since I was a child and my mother took me there for the first time.
