The reality is that she was dealing with significant mental health issues. Many people experience a divorce, even one involving a spouse who remarries someone younger, and they do not respond with violence. Her actions were not a typical reaction to those circumstances, they were the result of underlying psychological instability that didn’t seem to be managed.

She never seemed to have any remorse for her actions. BTW, if you havent seen the TV movies about this, Meredith Baxter does a fab job as Betty.

@jlkz - She became a celebrity when she murdered her ex-husband and his wife.

It was reported she supported him while he went through medical school. In the end, he had an affair, divorced her, got everything including the children leaving her with nothing. She snapped.

There were several tv movies and books made about her and her life.

I saw a Dateline type show about her and the murder of her husband.

She certainly became a troubled woman. She did not have the resources that her husband had. And he also made sure that he won every battle they had. And he reminded her of that fact.

You saw how she was really on her own and deteriorating. Certainly it is no excuse for what she did but you saw her decline.

The ex-husband bought her a beach front house in La Jolla, California and her alimony was 16,000 a month - back in the 80's. She could have lived a very happy life.

She had plenty of money and still wasn't happy. She threw it away on hiring multiple attorneys and clothes/jewelry.

I've read articles and seen many movies on her. My feelings from what I know are she really got the raw end of the deal. And yes, many experience the same things she did and like @Biftu said, she took it to the extreme. No excuses for the end result.

With that said, anybody that does what she did has some sort of mental issues. It's always the children who suffer the most.

If her husband and Linda provoked her, it only underscores how dangerous it is to engage with someone already showing clear signs of emotional instability. Emotional volatility doesn’t appear overnight, the Betty Broderick case shows why those warning signs shouldn’t be ignored, and why provoking or escalating with an unstable person can make an already volatile situation more dangerous.

@Shelbelle you are so right about Meredith Baxter Birney. She was perfect in that role. I've seen it so many times and it still gives me goose bumps. Just the look on her face and the way she talked. I think I read that she got to meet the real person while she was in prison.

I know someone who is going through a divorce right now and it is absolutely horrible.

Divorce is never easy but there are couples who manage it and stay friendly, probably the best way.

Betty was fragile and not strong enough to stand up to what she considered cruelty, and those around her should have tried to get her into therapy or some type of help.

Sad all the way around, especially for the children.

I'll chime in that Meredith did a fabulous job in that role. For those who haven't seen the show, you would probably enjoy watching it.
