@Desertdi I was in Realto. I believe San Bernardino was ground zero. In a matter of approximately 6 seconds, the tv shot off, the ceiling cracked, I fell off the couch as I saw my life flash across my eyes.

I took the first flight back to the east coast the following morning. Ain't been back since.

@I am still oxox Ahhh yes, and the 7.1 in 1989. I worked in San Francisco at the time and lived in the East Bay. I'm still here and one never gets used to earthquakes LOL

That quake is WHY I now live in Arizona... The glass-walled office building where I worked didn't do so well. The outside glass elevator hit the ground, and the building was condemned.

Of course, NOBODY was hiring, either... I needed a paycheck to pay the rent...so I moved over to Phoenix. di

I vividly recall the August 2011 quake, centered in Virginia, that registered 5.8 in New York City. If you recall, the Washington Monument sustained damage.

My rolling desk chair on the 55th floor moved, startling me and almost everyone ran to the elevators.

I stayed put. You don't want to be out on the streets if building debris starts falling.

And the Loma Prieta 6.9 quake we had in SF in 1989 when the Bay Bridge collapsed and the World Series game between the SF Giants and Oakland A's had to stop!

As a northeasterner semi quake virgin even I have sense enough not to go inside elevators during a quake.

Like you I stayed put...on the floor. My aunt flew under a table, my mother in the tub & my brother stood inside the front door archway.

native Californian here, lol! No elevators or stairwells for me in a quake. Usually best to stay put, and duck and cover, away from windows and falling objects over head. It is surprising how strong the buildings are , especially if built in last 30 years or so. It's the outside that be havoc in a bad one. San Francisco had so much damage with building collapse, because many of the buildings were old, 1800's early 1900. And brick. Professional Building and homes here aren't build with regular bricks anymore. We also have earthquake code, and many older buildings reinforced with rebar

As a Native Californian, I offer a few hints if you getting quakes suddenly. I mean where you never had them, and now are experiencing them, prepare. . I invested in some Museum Putty to tack down vases, and objects d art, collectibles, items on mantels, curio cabinets. Depending on what side your quakes tend to come from we bolted the China hutch and huge mirror in LR down with those Molly bolts. Most of my neighbors lost breakables from cabinets, etc during the Loma Prieta 89 quake. We didn't. Museum putty save many items. We also have a safety lock on China hutch so doors don't fly open. The museum putty is applied quick, is inexpensive, works, and doesn't ruin furniture or paint

@They CallMe MRWILKES I remember that quake. I was home alone watching QVC at the time. Jill Bauer (a native Californian) was the host. A piece of equipment fell with a bang in the studio and she calmly remarked that there must have been an earthquake. She then proceeded with the show as if nothing had happened. I got under the dining room table until it was over.

i recall that too. Maryland got shook. I was outside in front of the university. I suddenly tripped and fell forward. As I fell I knew for sure it was an earth quack. All those years in L.A. A couple of other people fell too. My husband was home, felt the shaking at the house "groaned" his word. Our ceiling had a crack on second floor.

August 23rd 2011. we were in Long Island in the hospital. My Mom and me were with my Dad in his ICU room and the floor moved in waves and his bed started rolling back and forth. We thought he was trying to communicate with us! He was intubated and hooked up to lots of machines.

His room had huge windows and I looked outside to see people running out of the building. then we realized it might be an earthquake.

Interesting, but I guess since earthquakes aren't really predictable, it can unnerve people.

However ... every single year .... predictably .... several states deal with tornadoes and hurricanes, which can do a LOT more damage ... and they continue to stay in those areas.

Every area has "something".

I also don't understand why earthquakes are considered scarier than tornadoes, hurricanes and floodings.
