There's a nice article in today's Philalphia Inquirer. (I tried to post the link but I'm not sure how to do it on my tablet.)

The article was about all their faithful customers who have kept them in business these past 40 years. They interviewed several of them and their stories were interesting. One lady had no idea how much she owed QVC because she uses easy pay for everything. She thinks it's about $5,000.

At the end of 2024, 75% of viewers were over 55. As they age, the younger generation doesn't sit and watch like the original viewers did. QVC is well aware of needing to reach the next generation. They picked up 225,000 new customers from TikTok. But, they are billions of dollars in debt.

A big challenge has been Amazon. Amazon is so big they can't compete. But, they have no intentions of giving up.

Amazon is great but QVC has many products that I can't find at Amazon.

@Winkk I don't think Amazon is their competition. They may say that, but how many people actually buy their clothes and makeup on Amazon? Their lack of revenue is due to their extremely poor marketing, terrible leadership, and rising prices.

@Effie54 .I don't disagree with you. But, Amazon really hurts a lot of other retailers who don't have the cash flow to compete. I love Amazon and I have been getting my cosmetics and some clothing from them. I thought the article was nice because they were appreciative of all their customers.

I wonder how they could know the average age of their viewers. I’ve never told them my age anywhere. Could it be a guess…

Our "information" is out there, and many companies collect data and sell it. Even if you've never told QVC anything about yourself, another source may have told them what they wanted to know.

Amazon has hurt a lot of companies, the one my husband owns included.

Just to vent here - people can be so rude. I can't tell you HOW MANY times a customer will ask if the products we sell can be found on Amazon. Some people will stand at our on site location and search Amazon on their phone for our product while in our selling area. The thing is, said customer would not even know about that product had we not brought it right to them. Plus, we have to pay to be in that space, so matching a price on Amazon, if they even have it, is not possible.

Can you imagine calling in to QVC, on air, and asking the vendor if, say, a vacuum cleaner is also available on Amazon?

I am still shopping at QVC, though I a trying to cut back. I shop when I watch, mostly. But I am watching less and less. There are more hosts that I WON'T watch than those that I will. I like Susan Graver's clothes. But gosh darn it, why does it seem that JT is almost always her host? UGH. Probably because it is a continuous gush fest over Susan. Enough already.

@Puppy Lips Well said; Amazon has been immeasurably destructive to retail in many ways.

I have been in bookstores and seen people looking up, in the Amazon app, the book they are holding in their hands. It makes me want to grab their phones and beat them about their heads with it. Fortunately I have not yet indulged in acting this out.

I’m not sure what to make of that. Seems like a lot of trouble to track down each individual person — millions of them. It would be easy to see what state people are from because they have our address. But their age? That’s more obscure.

@Teddie. They arbitrarily called and interviewed people. Ask their age as part of the interview. Probably asked if they were over 55.

@Puppy Lips No one can compete with Amazon.Americans have chosen to buy from Amazon rather than local businesses. Jeff Bezos is one of many billionaires who exert influence in all aspects of our life without accountability. The job losses will accelerate when AI bots take over more jobs.

@Etoile308 .. They aren't alienating their faithful customers. Their faithful customers are getting old and their not buying as much. And, there isn't enough of the next generation to compensate.

They are well aware of the customers who have been with them for a long time. That was one of the points in the article.

They know which of us are not longer watching, and no longer buying...for a variety of reasons. If we are not buying as much, perhaps they should reevaluate what they are offering, and more importantly how it is being presented.

@Winkk What I thought was that most of the woman interviewed have serious addition issues = shopaholics.

At least one woman "complained" about easy pay as she "thinks" she owes Q 5k.

Another purchases so much stuff, she does not remember ordering!

Another uses easy pay for every purchase. She does not even know how much she owes the Q!

Q has not even hit 1 million in new customers. That's bad.

The "generation" Q is after do NOT

have gift closets

gardens

buys dust collectors & knick-knacks

buys so much stuff they stuff their closets w/unopened boxes/packages

rent storage space for excess purchases, etc.

I've said this before & it needs to be mentioned again.....

Q needs to get designers/vendors who think out the box, represent "people of color." If they want new customers.

QVC should get out of its own way. Go back and review old (way old) videos and see how sales were handled. No crazy singing/dancing/yelling/personal stories/no shows with 2 or 3 host plus a vendor… and a wide variety of products NOT OWNED by QVC. Hosts behaving politely and with manners. Dressed well and programming that was faster paced and more items per time slot. I remember those days and the products sold. The host behavior reflected the job at hand not a carnival huckster atmosphere. Just sayin.
