First WTC Bombing Anniversary

There were six victims and an unborn child in 1993:

Each year on February 26, victims’ families, survivors, downtown residents and workers, and city and state officials mark the anniversary of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing with a moment of silence, the tolling of a bell, and a reading of the names of the six victims of the first terror attack at the site.

The first memorial to the 1993 victims was destroyed in 2001.

A fragment was recovered and is now on display at the Memorial Museum.

Thank you for the reminder. This was a horrific event and I don't remember if the press spelled out the the whys and wherefores but we certainly know that now.

My husband then fiance was the building manager of one of the smaller buildings it took me a long while to get a hold of him. It was 3 months before our wedding

I worked directly across the street, at 100 Church Street. Terrible. So sad.

At the time of the explosion no one knew whether it was a bomb or uncommon earthquake or gas leak. We were just told to get out quickly; it happened during lunchtime.

Info from Port Authorty website on the 6 adults and unborn child killed on February 26, 1993.

"Robert Kirkpatrick, 61, was a senior structural maintenance supervisor from Suffern, N.Y. He was considering retirement in November that year.

Stephen Knapp, 47, was the agency’s chief maintenance supervisor. His son and namesake, Stephen Knapp Jr., is currently the general manager of the agency’s three Staten Island bridges.

William Macko, 57, was a former U.S. Marine who was the agency’s assistant chief mechanical supervisor at the World Trade Center. The father of four lived in Bayonne, N.J.

Monica Rodriguez Smith, 35, was an Ecuadorian native who was planning to start maternity leave the next day in preparation for the birth of her first child, Eddie. She was a Port Authority mechanical unit secretary based at the World Trade Center.

John DiGiovanni, 45, was an East Coast sales manager for Kerr Chemicals. He had just parked his car in the World Trade Center parking garage after heading there for a sales call.

Wilfredo Mercado, 37, worked two jobs at the World Trade Center to support his wife and their two daughters. On weekends, he was a security guard. On weekdays, he was a purchasing agent for the North Tower restaurant Windows on the World, and on that February day he was receiving food deliveries in the basement. "

It's unbelievable how easily people forget what happened and who commited the eveil deed unless they were directly affected.

@Caaareful Shopper Slightly off topic, but 100 Church Street was where my last office was located before I retired in 2020. I didn't work there in 1993; I was working in midtown then. However in late 1999 I got a job downtown on Rector Street and we moved to 100 Church in 2014. Small world.

It was a horrible thing, but I'm not sure I ever heard a confirmation of who actually was behind this. There were a few theories, but that came later.

I totally forgot that the week previous I hung out with my other half as he babysat a moving project, we were all over the garage areas of the WTC. Who knew that they would be destroyed a week later

Mahmud Abouhalima, Ahmad Ajaj, Nidal Ayyad, and Mohammed Salameh—who were sentenced to 240 years in prison. Mastermind Ramzi Ahmed Yousef was captured in 1995 and sentenced to life, while driver Eyad Ismoil was also convicted. "

I worked in the WTC and I remember it like it was yesterday. It happened in the garage and I was at my desk. And then there was 9/11 - also still worked at the WTC. I will never, ever forget.

I believe the sentences were reduced but all will still be 90-100 years old even if released. They are there for life regardless of any reduction in sentences.
