Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest - Cam 1

Jackie standing guard over her "stick" nest.

When it's egg laying time (starts in January), Shadow & Jackie will be bringing a lot of moss, grass, hay, etc to soften the egg laying bed.

The nest walls were taller last year. Maybe they are not finished w/the walls yet.

Jackie went full-on attack on a young eagle that tried to land in the nest. Yesterday, or day before. It was pretty brutal.

I have a strong suspicion it was Gizmo. Of course, it could have been any youngster, but Giz had some dependency issues, unlike Sunny, who seemed more anxious to be on her own.

Maybe Giz thought it was safe. She had to see that Jackie was there. Maybe it looked like an invitation to return. The young don't usually look for a fight with the elders. It was sad to see the film.

Hope J&S get the nest in good shape for a new family. It's looking kind of rough right now.

Since I was the one who started the post for the 2025 nesting, I requested it to be locked because it is NOW OLD NEWS. The eagles are currently working on 2026 nesting = NEW NEWS.

When I read your post, it just wasn't clear (to me). Maybe my coffee hadn't kicked in yet.

I've started many new threads on here, and none of them are on my laptop; they are here on the QVC boards.

It sounds like you might have downloaded the other thread and I didn't understand why you'd do that.

Sticky Business

Neither snow, nor rain, nor sleet, nor hail can keep Jackie & Shadow from delivering sticks to their nest!

Yesterday Jackie & Shadow delivered 28 sticks to the nest in a fabulous show of teamwork. Jackie with 15 and Shadow 13 deliveries to break the previous record of 25 sticks in one day! Many more wonky sticks were added to the nest and some of those took both of them to get it under control!

The nest is looking quite sticky now, but no worries, they will have it perfect just in time for eggs.

About midway through, they both stopped to rest and do a little bird watching, keeping an eye on the local ravens that were performing acrobats in the skies above the nest.

Live Camera Update: With several days of heavy cloud cover, both solar powered live cameras have been going out intermittently. With the batteries having a low charge this afternoon, the decision was made to take Cam 2 offline. Soon after Cam 1 was taken offline to conserve power over night.

The forecast shows a few sunny days ahead and the batteries should be able to fully charge.

Lazy Days and a Surprise Drop In…

Jackie and/or Shadow have been seen in the habitat on camera every day since their grand record-breaking stick-a-palooza! It seems maybe they needed a few days to rest, reflect and regroup before continuing nestorations.

Friday they both showed up stickless and checked out the nest’s progress, possibly doing an inventory count of how many more sticks they will need.

Shadow stood still waiting for Jackie, they both tinkered with a few sticks, but ultimately ended up perching and watching over the habitat. Shadow came down from his perch to do a bit of clean up when Jackie joined him but seemed to have a change of heart after looking at all those sticks!

They both moved to the front porch where they spent some quiet time until something caught their eye, Jackie rushed out while Shadow took his time, checking out the situation and soon followed. They spent two hours mostly perching and looking out over the valley. Bald Eagles spend up to 90% of their day perching.

Jackie and Shadow both flew in with some sticks later in the afternoon. Shadow stopped in one more time to check in before heading out to roost for the night. Soon Jackie circled the nest and, to Shadow’s surprise, landed in the canopy!

Shadow seemed confused at why Jackie was way up there in Sunny’s landing spot but went about his business of making needed adjustments to the nest… until… Jackie just seemed to fall from the sky, making a grand entrance and startling Shadow at the same time!

Did you know? The nest tree is equipped with an infrared light (IR) so the camera can view the nest, eagles and other visitors at night. The light is not visible to the eagles or humans. For Jackie and Shadow, the nest is in complete darkness.

Uninvited Guest…

Yesterday started out business as usual, with Jackie & Shadow waking up in one of their favored roost trees by the nest, belted out good morning chortles, visited the nest and delivered some sticks.

In the afternoon as Shadow was delivering a stick, a juvenile (1st year) bald eagle followed him in and landed on the edge of the nest! Shadow quickly took action with a side kick and pushed the juvenile off the nest. The juvenile then landed just below the nest. Jackie came in, there was a short altercation, and the juvenile went on its way.

It is possible the young eagle followed Shadow to the nest thinking there might be food available. In the first year, juveniles depend mostly on stealing food (Kleptoparasitism) while they perfect their hunting skills. There was some minimal contact between Jackie and the juvenile, the juvenile should be fine after learning this life lesson.

Being a first-year bald eagle, could it be Sunny or Gizmo? It could be, or it could be one of the many other bald eagles hatched this year. Young eagles can travel 1,000 miles or more from their nesting site before settling down when they reach maturity. We have many visiting bald eagles in the Big Bear Valley, especially in the winter months.

Whether this was a visiting eagle, or one of Jackie and Shadow’s offspring, they are considered intruders and will be escorted out of the area. Though it might have been difficult for some to see and hear, just know Jackie and Shadow did exactly what they are supposed to do. They are protecting their habitat and nest as they prepare for a new season of eggs and eaglets.

Later in the day, Jackie and Shadow both delivered more sticks, and calmly perched in the nest tree. Shadow ended the day, soaring off for the night under beautiful pink skies.

FYI, there was considerable discussion (and concern) about the juvenile eagle that was dis-invited.

Some thought it might have been Gizmo or Sunny, but others didn't think so.

After seeing last year's devotion to the eaglets, some felt it it was very surprising behavior.

Two full crops and two more sticks…

Just prior to yet another beautiful sunset in the eagle habitat over the weekend, Jackie arrived at the nest first on Saturday afternoon for a quick check to make sure all was in order. After a thorough look around, she began by moving one small stick. Suddenly, she changed her mind and instead of working she hopped up to the back porch observation tower.

She was just as beautiful and alert as always while she took a long look around in all directions, perhaps waiting for Shadow to join her. Just after she headed out the back porch, a few seconds later, Shadow suddenly came through the front porch, landing on the nest with a new stick. He began moving a few of the older sticks here and there, placing them on the right side of the nest.

Then he hopped over to that thick front porch branch and began to sharpen his beak there to help get it ready for his next meal. Oh yes… and by the size of his crop, it looked like he had recently enjoyed a nice big fish dinner!

As the sun was setting behind him, Shadow looked confident and bold while he perched there. He used his strong legs and sharp talons to grip that thick branch, while his eyes were focused out over the habitat. After some quick glances around the neighborhood, off he went.

A few minutes later, in came Jackie again, this time with a medium-sized stick. They had just missed one another again! She was still not quite ready to work on any serious nestorations, so it was a return trip for her up to the back porch branch.

Before flying over to the Roost Tree to finally meet up with Shadow for the night, we had a perfect close-up as Jackie also showed off her full crop… a good indication that both are eating well.

I almost packed the car and was off to feed it, lol lol. So sad. In a human world you would think, or hope, Jackie woukd give food. But in animal world, I don't think so. Sniff

A Crunchy Nest, Photo Shoot and Bonding Bumps

Monday, Jackie & Shadow stopped by the nest, made a couple of deliveries and fiddled with some sticks. The sounds of the nest have become quite crunchy with every step they take on all those new sticks! They took some time late afternoon for a sweet beaky kiss before heading out to roost. Lucky for us, they were in the roost tree near the nest.

Early morning on Tuesday, our camera operators were up in the wee hours with Jackie and Shadow to find them hollering out good morning chortles to the valley!

They seemed to take the morning off but really kicked it in to high gear midday. Jackie & Shadow worked in unison delivering 5 sticks in under an hour, worked together to get them just right… or just right for the moment.

Taking a few minutes to sit and look stunning for their fans…and stunning they are! Jackie spent some alone time on the front porch, on a beautiful day in full sun giving us a chance for a close-up photo shoot s

howing all of her beautifully detailed feathers and so much more.

As the sun was setting, Shadow came in with one more whopper of a stick estimated to be 4+ feet long! As he was holding on to the stick with one talon and catching his balance, he managed to snap that long stick in half, he seemed quite proud of himself.

Jackie soon joined him and went straight for half of Shadow’s trophy stick, but Shadow wasn’t having any of that, he put it to the side to work on later.

Jackie was looking a bit flirty, bumping and nibbling on Shadow. Nest building, bumping, nibbling and beaky kisses are all part of their bonding process. They both headed out one after the other and again chose the roost tree near the nest for the night.

@Tinkrbl44 I miss them. I just keep thinking of the poor eaglet looking for food and getting rebuffed. But idk, I sorta think Jackie woukd know them maybe. I am also wondering about the nest building. This nest building comes before the egg making, right? Before they hoochi coochie? lol lol.

ETA I am headed to Studio City tomorrow. It's been in the 70's? I hear nights are cool, like here in the 40's. But wondering about what to pack for day time. We stay in Burbank, almost next to old Warner Bros studio lot. Looks like they are tearing that down and building something new

Chilly nights, but warmer next week. Check daily temps next week on the Weather Channel app. High of 80 on Tuesday, so have "layers" of clothing packed.
