Curious about posting etiquette....

I have read this before and just did again on another thread below and it really made me curious to know....

If someone starts a thread is it annoying to you, as the reader to see the OP poster respond to every single post or a majority of them?

EDITED to add: It's not at all annoying to me, I do think it's sweet, just fyi.

Yes. I feel like there needs to be more input from the OP but commenting to all is really not necessary unless you really enjoy it. A heart would do just as well.

I agree with @beckyb1012 as while it's IMO not necessary for OP to respond to every post, I know from past threads that some get all annoyed if OP doesn't come back and respond. IMO who cares if OP doesn't come back and respond in the way some think she should. And also, as much as some get berated here, I don't blame them for not returning to respond.

No need to respond unless a question is asked to get more information. It is nice to say "thank you in advance" to everyone that might respond

No. Posters should be able to answer or not. Up to them and I couldn't care less how often they do or don't.

No, it is not annoying to me if the OP answers all of the posts. What does annoy me is when a poster asks a question but does not give his/her own experience/preference. For example, "What was your most humiliating moment" and they don't share their moment with others.

I agree totally with this. Matters not to me when or if someone responds or how often. In fact, I smh at those who demand a "thank you" for another poster taking the time and effort to respond. Really? It takes me what, all of 2 seconds to respond to someone so they owe me a huge "thanks"?

It does not bother me at all.

There may be reasons you are not aware of that make a poster do that.

The only thing that bothers me is when an OP posts once and never comes back with an update. I think it is just common courtesy to expect people that took time out of their day to respond, should receive some acknowledgment that they were heard.

If I'm being honest, @GingerHead, I guess sometimes it does and other times it doesn't. Sometimes I think it's monotonous to answer each post with just a thank you and by doing so fill up an entire page or more. As someone else stated, a "heart" would suffice, as it would acknowledge that the OP read the respondent's comment.

I think what's more annoying is when an OP will start a thread proposing a question or situation and they provide insufficient foundation and details, and then they get mad and snippy at the replies they don't like, or if they disagree with a response and want to challenge the author. Let me just say, we may not have an actual "ignore" button but I can do that myself. I've learned who to avoid.

The only circumstances when I think an OP might reply directly is if they asked a specific question or are looking for help/suggestions.

Otherwise, I don't think that addressing individuals is required/necessary.

Even a "thanks to everyone who responded" could be enough.

I disagree. This is a "Community," and anyone can choose to participate ... or not.

Personally, I think it's incredibly rude to start a discussion and then just disappear ... or run away.

I assume that anyone who finds these discussion boards has at least a little experience with online posting, and aren't "newbies" to the internet.

Having said that, people who start threads should expect varied opinions. People won't always agree with us, and no one should be surprised.

Anyone can Google Message Board Etiquette and get the basics, which are just common sense, IMO.

There are many articles, but here's one list that I think covers most of the bases:

Follow these 15 rules of etiquette to make sure you sound respectful polite and knowledgeable when you post to your class’s online discussion board.

Before posting your question to a discussion board, check if anyone has asked it already and received a reply. Just as you wouldn’t repeat a topic of discussion right after it happened in real life, don’t do it in discussion boards either.
Stay on topic – Don’t post irrelevant links, comments, thoughts, or pictures
Don’t type in ALL CAPS! If you do, it will look like you’re screaming.
Don’t write anything that sounds angry or sarcastic , even as a joke, because without hearing your tone of voice, your peers might not realize you’re joking.
Always remember to say “Please” and “Thank You” when soliciting help from your classmates
Respect the opinions of your classmates. If you feel the need to disagree, do so respectively and acknowledge the valid points in your classmate’s argument. Acknowledge that others are entitled to have their own perspective on the issue.
If you reply to a question from a classmate, make sure your answer is accurate! If you are not 100% sure when the paper is due, DO NOT GUESS! Otherwise, you could really mess things up for your classmates and they will not appreciate it.
If you ask a question and many people respond, summarize all answers and post that summary to benefit your whole class.
Be brief. If you write a long dissertation in response to a simple question, it’s unlikely that anyone will spend the time to read through it all
Don’t badmouth others or call them stupid. You may disagree with their ideas, but don’t mock the person.
If you refer to something your classmate said earlier in the discussion, quote just a few key lines from their post so that others won’t have to go back and figure out which post you’re referring to.
Before asking a question, check the class FAQs or search the internet to see if the answer is obvious or easy to find.
Check the most recent comments before you reply to an older comment, since the issue might have already been resolved or opinions may have changed.
Be forgiving. If your classmate makes a mistake, don’t badger him or her for it. Just let it go -it happens to the best of us.
Run a spelling and grammar check before posting anything to the discussion board. It only takes a minute and can make the difference between sounding like a fool and sounding knowledgeable.

This is a simple yet restrictive chat site.

Whether by a responding post, a heart (or both) or nothing at all I just do not understand why this is important?

Everyone is different. I would not like to be considered without "etiquette" if I respond to everyone and I also would not find a poster who doesn't respond to
those who gave advice as rude etc.

The fact is I really do not care either way.

It's just not making my life better or worse.

When I start a thread sometimes I do respond to everyone and sometimes I don't because it's quite a job to do that. But I will heart and summarize things or answer questions.

I just feel guilty for some reason if I don't respond to everyone, like I said in my other post...I feel sorta like I'm hosting a party and I feel the need to greet and meet everyone personally. Don't ask me why?haha

Although I don't expect everyone to respond to me personally when I post to others threads.

But I know when I'm on the other end, reading and posting to others threads I don't care if they do or don't respond to everybody individualy, I'm not that picky....I do see it as sweet if they choose to and have no problem with it, why would I?

I do prefer as others have stated and as an additional thought to my original question, when updates are given or questions answered and it's annoying when they just ghost the thread and posters altogether.....

Thanks everybody! That other post got me to thinking and I was just curious how others felt....

I absolutely agree, none of this matters in the whole scheme of things...not many things do really.

I was just asking because I've seen more than once where posters get annoyed or point out where others answer every single post, which I used to do and still do on occasion as well (answer every single post and only stopped sometimes because it's a big chore) and I was just curious how others felt about it because that reaction surprised me.

And maybe the posters who posted that were just teasing or not really serious (nothing against them....please don't feel that I have anything against ya'll...I don't!.....I was just curious how others felt)
