Remembering Pearl Harbor

On our local news this morning, they said there are only 12 survivors still living. December 7th is always a somber day, but living on O'ahu, it seems especially so. We are watching the memorial on television today and it is heart wrenching watching the old videos.

If y'all ever visit O'ahu, make sure your first visit is Pearl Harbor. The greatest generation is almost all gone and I hope I don't live long enough to see them forgotten. We are still living under the freedom of their sacrifice and I pray we never lose it

This is the first year that there is not even one survivor attending the ceremonies.

Ike Schab of Oregon, 105, planned to attend but fell ill.

Wish him and the 11 others who couldn't make the trip well.

@SurferWife - Thank you for your post. There are so many events that we ourselves may not remember, but we are just a generation away from those who do.

I have always wanted to go to Hawaii, and I haven't given up! DH's good friend, who was in our wedding, was from there. He grew up on the side of a mountain, where his dad still lived. We had a standing invitation to go, but never did. Sadly, his friend died from cancer when he was 50.

My mom's childhood friend, who lived a few houses away from her, was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He was in the Army and survived. He went on to become a General.

Remembering those who perished today.

Mom and Dad attended several reunion ceremonies because Dad was in the Navy. Had he lived he would have been 100 years old now.

@SurferWife - We have visited the memorial several times while in O'aho, this overhead view of the memorial built on top of the USS Arizona always brings chill to me. To this day drops of oil still bubbles up to the surface of the water, it is said that it is the tears of the crew killed on that fateful day. May they rest in eternal peace.

I have visited the Memorial many times. I always get goosebumps there. The museum with personal mementos where you see pictures and property of the young men who were there really hits you where you live. All those very young lives lost is so sad.

If you get the chance, please visit. The trip is worth it.

I am wearing the sweatshirt I bought while there to honor our brave fallen hero's. May they RIP and may God bless the still living survivors.

@SurferWife My dad died last year at the age of 98. He was a Navy veteran who served in the Pacific Fleet. Pearl Harbor was the reason he joined.

He was so proud of his service and often told stories about being in Pearl Harbor years after the attack. Your sentiment is deeply true ... the freedoms we now enjoy were kept for us, because of them. I too pray...

I visited Pearl Harbor about 15 years ago while on a Hawaiian cruise. It took my breath away. Like every other student, I learned about it in American History so many years ago, still see pictures on TV, and read news articles, but to stand right there and see the oil still floating on the water is heart breaking.

Oh, my goodness...the missing man fly-over....💔. An emotional interview with the airmen & some Japanese survivors. God bless them. A canteen....to remember our soldiers and Japanese. A healing between two former enemies. It is the "blackened canteen ceremony" that brought them together.

Visited the Arizona once about 25 years ago. Very somber place to visit.

I remember watching the film of the tragedy that had taken place that Lauren Bacall narrated and then on to the site of the sunken ship/memorial.

We were stunned by a busload of tourists there, chatting happily and taking snapshots.

We also visited the 'Punchbowl cemetary'. Another sombering place. The inscription by Lincoln on a statue:

The solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

We hadn't remembered Pearl Harbor till we visited my dad tonight and I looked at his clock that also shows the date. May all their souls be at rest.

@SurferWife We've been to Oahu twice. It's magnificent.

We visited the USS Arizona Memorial as well as the Punchbowl Crater.
Seeing the USS Arizona was deeply moving and breathtaking ar the same time.

My SO and I were out at dinner this evening and he was remembering hiding under the bed at 4 yrs of age with his brother and sister while bombs were being dropped. What an experience to have lived through. Buildings just down the street from his home were reduced to rubble. He and his family moved to the mainland when he was 10.
