By now I think you all know his story: rough start in life, turned into a shelter as a 3 week old infant kitten, was in a different (and equally wonderful) shelter till he spotted my husband when we were taking a tour and reached his little paws through the cage and said, "You're my daddy! Take me home!" So of course we did, and that was nine years ago.

Fast forward: Boo has a weak constitution and is likely to catch any bug that comes along -- and let that be a reminded to all of us to keep our beloved companions in the house all the time and/or get them the vaccinations that their veterinarians advise.

Boo had some surgical work done on this teeth recently and he's not bouncing back quite as quickly as I had hoped. He was given a round of liquid antibiotics when were amazingly effective but it upset his stomach that he couldn't keep dry cat food down. I talk to his vet and the outcome of that was to give him as little dry food as possible and feed him wet cat food, and I think we all know the reasons--better nutrition, more meat and less carbs, less food allergies, etc.

That's what we've done and he hasn't pepped up. Her certainly hasn't turned into a lazy slug that just sleep and purrs all over the house and certain persons' laps. I guess what I' trying to say he isn't as energetic as he was and I'm a little worried.

But of course, he IS 9-1/2 years old an isn't just a romping, brimful of energy, chase-mom's-tail little ball of fur he used to be. But he's STILL my beloved Baby Boy, my BooBoo, and if anyone would include him and us his family in your prayer, good thoughts, positivity sent out to the universe, I would welcome them.

Thanks for listening; O really didn't mean for this to go on this long

Will definitely add your BooBoo to my prayers (I also had a BuBu - his name was Abu). My kitties who have trouble with liquid antibiotic get the shot instead. I know there is a lot of controversy about that, but it's worked for us so far. Maybe offer small amounts of the canned food often. He's probably still recovering from the surgery and maybe once his nutrition is back to normal, he's perk up. So sad when our babies aren't feeling well and we don't know exactly how to help them. Good luck and bless you!

I certainly will. BooBoo is a Maine Coon if I remember correctly? My Tiggi had 2 strokes in the recovery room after her last dental work which was 2 years ago next month. Although she needs another dental, never again, I can't take that chance. I also raised her from the age of 3 weeks....I think it's in their nature to slow down at this age, I can see a definite difference in the way she acts in the past year These Maine Coons can sure wrap their paws around your heart.

I will definitely pray for your Boo Boo to get well soon.

You may already know all of these things -- but here are some suggestions and some things to keep in mind:

It can take months for cats to recuperate from any type of surgery. Just the effects of the anesthesia alone can take them months to recuperate from. It isn't uncommon for cats to take 6 months or more to fully recuperate from surgery, tooth extractions, cleanings.

It can also take months for a cat to recuperate from an illness or from a round of antibiotic that was prescribed for the illness.

He isn't that old comparatively speaking. In cat years, he is about 49 years old (from page 567, Comparative Age of Cats and Humans, Cat Owners Veterinary Handbook-- third edition.) Just letting you know that he is a middle aged cat, not a geriatric cat.

Talk to your vet about adding a vitamin and mineral supplement to his diet such as Nutri-Cal or Spectrin For CATS. Nutri-Cal is in gel form, easy to give a little on your finger and Spectrin is best given in a little syringe or dropper.

Antibiotics kill all good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria so a probiotic may be needed by your cat to help regenerate the good bacteria in your cats gut. FORTIFLORA is generally recommended by vets to add to cats canned food. It has the good bacteria your cat needs to regenerate the good bacteria to help his GI tract regain it's vitality.

Also, no sugar plain yogurt can help your cat regain good bacteria in his gut. I give my cats about 1/2 teaspoon in a little rubber tipped spatula.

My vet recommended L-Lysine, 250 mg. twice a day crushed and put into my cats food. Ask your vet about using L-Lysine to help strengthen his immune system.

It's always a good idea to run everything by your vet. That's what I do. Ask your vet about a vitamin & mineral supplement, a probiotic, yogurt and L-Lysine.

Hope this helps. All the best to you and your kitty Boo Boo. Take care.

Good news! Boo is back to his old, funny and sweet self. He's eating well and seems to feel a lot better. I don't know if I mentioned it, that Boo did see the vet on (I think) Monday. She had planned to give him an injection of an antibiotic that's effective for two weeks. However, she decided not to, since he's doing well and always reacts strongly to shots. He's getting only wet food; he misses his dry snacks, but he's getting used to canned food only.

Thank you all so much for your affectionate concern about my baby boy!
