WHAT DO THE COLORS ON BREAD TAGS MEAN?

I've never been sure about the dates bread is baked, based on the color of the tags.

When I found this, I had to share, as I can't be the only person who didn't know the meanings of various colors .... right?

What Are the Plastic Tags on Bread Bags?

Picking up a loaf of bread from a grocery store's bakery is your best bet for getting something that's fresh. Typically, those loaves have been baked within a day or two of when they're for sale in the store. But to know exactly when it was baked, you want to take a look at the colored plastic tag or tie that closes the bag.

Those pieces of plastic are called "bread clips" (aka bread tabs, bag clips, bread bag clips or bread buckles). The tag's color indicates when the loaf was stocked on the store's shelves.

What Do the Colors on Bread Tags Mean?

These color-coded tags indicate the date the bread was baked and packaged. It helps staff keep track of what was baked when, so they can rotate out older loaves as needed. Most grocery stores follow the schedule below:

Monday – Blue

Tuesday – Green
Thursday – Red
Friday – White
Saturday – Yellow

Wondering where Wednesday and Sunday are? Most bread bakeries take a production break on those days.

How Can I Remember the Schedule of Color-Coded Bread Tags?

Now that you know that the color-coded tags actually mean something, how can you remember which color means which day? Luckily there is an easy way to remember the schedule.

The colors correspond to weekdays in alphabetical order:

Blue (Monday), Green (Tuesday), Red (Thursday), White (Friday), then Yellow (Saturday). For example, if it's Tuesday, you'll want to look for a loaf of bread with a blue or green tag.

Interesting information and never really thought about it. I always look for the date an item is to be fresh until or expires.

My load of bread has a white tag and I can't remember when I picked it up. I am sure now I will be paying attention.

Interesting. I never knew this was "a thing" and that there was any significance of the colors of the bread tags! Tks for sharing.

Yes, very interesting but I've found these charts to be inaccurate. Perhaps they apply to one specific bread company.

In my phone I have pictures of things I call Reference ... good for items like this. Take a photo and throw out that paper! LOL

Yesterday I defrosted some bread and kept one of the tags which was white. It was a 2 loaf pac from Costco so there were 3 tags. Who knows?

Funny you should say that.

After I first read this article, I made a point of checking bread tags at two different stores when I shopped there.

It seems fairly consistent.

I usually look at the date printed front. However, the stockers usually put the bread on at least 2 shelves. I take one from the lowest shelf because it's the newest date. When they stock again they move the bottom shelf up to where people usually grab and put the newest on the bottom.

I'm one of those shoppers that reaches to the back of the display to get the newest dated item.

@Scooby Doo thst is very true a, I always get a loaf from the bottom and it is softer as I check bottom shelve and the top , middle and it's always softer !

I remember when I was young my dad knew what the bread tags meant and bought our bread according to that.

i often wondered what they were , now I know . I put it in my phone so I have it when I'm shopping .

Very interesting. I never heard that before. But I buy my bread from a local bakeries. The bread and rolls I'm buying were baked the previous night. Unless I buy day old, which I sometimes do.

@Tinkrbl44 I had read about this several years ago so I started looking at the colors. Well, to my surprise every single loaf of bread I've bought in the past year has been white. So, which must mean that if I buy it on Thursday it was last week's bread 😂 Really I have no idea if it's true,but it's a fun game to play.
The bread that I buy is Nature's Own which has twist ties.
