More Trouble in National Parks

Bad drought then catastrophic flooding are taking a toll on our national parks in the Southwest.

I have stayed at Jacob Lake Inn many times. When family comes from out of state we stay there then go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

It's a beautiful place and has a wonderful restaurant and

bakery. I think it's been family owned for 75 years.

I hope it survives and everyone is safe.

this really saddens me. Our National Parks are such a treasure. Such a respite for many, and a glimmer of beauty in a world that sometimes isn't at its best

The grand canyon lodge at the north rim has been destroyed. It's been there since about 1937. It was so beautiful. So sad. So far nobody has been hurt so that's the good news.

@azgal. I just read about the destruction of the hotel. Very sad to hear that it burned down.

My parents always thought the best view of the canyon was from the North Rim.

@Kachina624 - DS worked at Big Bend one summer during college. He talked about the beauty of it and showed us the pictures he took.

They took the summer staff on a river raft trip and they ate lunch on an overhanging rock. When they got back on the river the staff member who was supervising asked them how many had been to Mexico? No one raised their hand. He then pointed to the rock where they ate and said, "You all have now!" DS was so excited!

You all are right - our state parks are our national treasures, and there are many I want to visit. It is sad to see these pictures.

Do you mean Big Bend....the national park (not a state park)? You and your son are right. It's extraordinary.

@Kachina624 My husband and I did too. National Parks were always places that we liked the best for vacations. Went to Grand Canyon more times than I can remember. I am so sad to see the devastation there. Lots of bad news with our National Treasures. Those lands are sacred. They need to be there for all of our citizens to enjoy. The tourists are often from all over the world. We have met and shared a table or bench or walk with many of them and they are always in awe. As am I.

@beach-mom. I'm a huge fan of our national park system and have been to many of them in the West. I'd much rather go to a national park than Disneyland.

If your ds liked Big Bend, he'd be in love with some of the parks in Utah.

we also love the NP!! we just got back from Arches, Canyonlands, bryce and zion!!!!

its such a shame what is happening on the north rim, and with the funding cuts, do not see how it will get better.

we only met a park ranger in Zion.

none in Bryce, Arches or Canyonlands. when we went a couple of years ago, they were hiking along with us.

sad that these treasures could be gone or neglected b/c of washington, d.c. or worse yet privately owned, then all bets are off and they will go by the wayside....

unfortunately we did not, was on the list but we just ran out time!!

we did not realize Canyonlands was so HUGE!!
