Flooding in New Mexico

A MASSIVE flooding event is unfolding now in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

A home was picked up off it's foundation and swept away in the flash flooding near Rio Ruidoso River.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for the area around the village of Ruidoso, which was scarred by wildfires last year.

There were no immediate reports of deaths, Kerry Gladden, a spokeswoman for the village of Ruidoso, said on late Tuesday afternoon. She said that two people had been injured and were in the hospital.

Emergency responders rescued people from swiftly moving water and those trapped in their homes. She said it was unclear how many rescues there had been.

The extent of damage was not immediately clear, Ms. Gladden said. The areas along the Rio Ruidoso extending into Ruidoso Downs and Glencoe were among the hardest hit places.

This is a developing story.

Ruidoso hasn't fully recovered from the flood they had last year when the Rio Ruidoso crested at 15ft. Today it reached over 20ft. Millions of dollars have been spent to rehab the area in the past year. People there know what to do when flooding is predicted.

that is scary. Hope all ends well. If what Kachina says happens, the people know what to do. I hope they do as well now. I assume they have a great warning system. Still doesn't help,with damage. That is the toughest part to deal with. I had friends that were spared their lives in the LOVE CREEK MUDSLIDES, Boulder Creek Calif in 1980's. The mud slide was , and all that mud was unbearable and buried people and homes forever. If they escaped like my friends, they lost everything, or spent months digging out what they could

When I saw the reports this evening on Ruidoso I thought of the former poster on the forums here who lived in the area. I checked and @On It hasn't posted since Fall of 2024. Hoping that her house is ok in this latest event.

Checked local sites for updates.

The U.S. Geological Service says the Rio Ruidoso rose from 2 feet to 15 feet in about two hours.

I lived in Boulder Creek through the 1980's-2000. I remember those horrible times, I lived on Big Basin Way, and could stand on my deck above the creek and watch houses and huge trees being swept away in the river.

@Alsace Gal oh you were lucky. Those floods were awful. I was in San Jose at the time. . The mus lasted forever. Remember parts of hiway 17, from Santa Cruz to San Jose was crumbled as well people couldn't get in or out without going the long way around for months. Areas just washed away. Still to this day I cannot remember a more rainy season ever. Even in the Santa Clara valley it rained forever, day after day, flooding wide spread. The hardest rain, all day , all night. I think the drought started after that!
Was your house okay? You must of lived right to the side. That mus I remember even a long time after was just gooey slop. The area is so gorgeous and peaceful.

I live in in Almaden Valley in San Jose and when we have bad rain storms highway 17 still has mudslides and Big Basin floods, trees get knocked down power goes out. Boulder Creek, Felton, Scotts Valley becomes a nightmare.

@Parischic oh, I know!! I have lived in the valley for over 67 years, and I can't remember a year where Hiway 17, hiway 1 by Carmel and Big Sur, and Hecker Pass haven't been in repair. Especially 17. I remember when 17 was 2 lanes, bumper to bumper, with water stops every miles because in the old days the cars woukd overheat going up that hill to beach, lol. Old radiators Glad those days are gone of overheated cars!

@shoesnbags in the past year I've checked a few times, no posts from @on it. She posted a lot during the flooding last year. I thought she had a home in Texas as well. I hope she was ok. Prayers for all those impacted.
