Kilauea Erupting

I rarely post here but to those interested and awake, Kilauea is erupting again, the 24th episode. To view, google usgs live kilauea and click on the live cameras. There are 3-east, west and south Halemaumau crater. The eruptions usually last several hours.

One time when we were visiting Hawaii we went to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and while there were no alerts at that time, a friend with us ("Henry") was so uneasy we had to leave. His wife was OK but he was petrified the entire time! I'm talking shaking, sweating, holding onto the rental car - it was "wow let's get him out of here right now" time. And he is a pretty much fearless guy too. But volcanos!

I was watching reports of Mt Etna the other day (after it erupted again on June 2) and saw all the tourists running away from it (they were all fine). I told my DH if that had happened when we were in Hawaii I believe Henry would have just passed out and we would have had to carry him!

I believe i heard Kilauea erupted last week but has since settled down again and is now not erupting.

Wow! That is something I would not like to live anywhere near!

I believe you mean the one in Hawaii. There's another volcano erupting in Sicily.

There's another that may erupt in the ocean, about 300 miles west of the Oregon coast.

Hi, @poidog ! My husband and I lived on the Big Island for 5 years in Waikoloa Village on the west side of the island. At the time, Kilauea was behaving and quite the tourist destination. On a visit in 2017, we treated our son, his wife and two kids to an overnight stay at the Volcano Hotel on the rim of the crater. Our rooms overlooked the crater and we had dinner in the restaurant with the volcano as the major attraction. There was a low level eruption going on in the crater at the time. The first pic below is a night shot of the crater from the Jagger Observatory. The second is from our hotel room, though the window screen, of the glow from the volcano around 6 the next morning.

Forgot to add...the first time we visited in 2004, we were actually able to drive down into the crater, park and walk around. Lots of signs warning visitors to avoid the noxious gases coming out of the earth. My, how much has changed since that trip!

Yes, Cakers3, I know that.

Right now there are approximately 1,350 active volcanoes worldwide, so naming the location is probably helpful for many who don't monitor them daily.
