Bicycle Safely

I live in a very nice development with a lot of teens. Bicycles should abide by the rules of the road and not ride on the payment. I was out using my walker for my daily walk and the kid rode past me from the back I was so startled I almost fell.Rant over

@I am still oxox You didn't specify what kind of bike but I agree. We have a big issue here in my area with e-Bikes riding on the sidewalk. It's very frustrating and dangerous. Some you can't even hear then they zoom by you.

I really wish laws would be enforced as e-bikes should be considered a motorized vehicle and not be allowed on the sidewalks. As for peddled bikes, I guess you can only expect courtesy being used. There are no laws in California about bikes being forbidden on sidewalks but, you were talking about teens and well, at that age most don't think about being courteous.

@cjm61 It was a teen on a regular bike I am not sure there are any e bikes around, since its against development rules to charge them in the garages. Its funny I never even think about e bikes I am old school

I agree, and there needs to be speed laws and enforcement regarding e-bikes. So many times, I have had an e-bike quickly get in my path that I did not see coming.

Yesterday, I was at an intersection, going to turn right, when an ebike appeared going against the traffic. We had a 2 boys get critically hurt from ebike accidents recently in my town.

As a pedestrian in NYC I find bicycles to be the most dangerous form of transportation.

I have seen pedestrians in a crosswalk hit and fall to the pavement, and I have had numerous close calls myself, even when having the right of way, they zoom out of nowhere, speeding in the wrong direction.

So many don't follow the rules of the road, don't yield or obey traffic lights, travel the wrong way on one way avenues and are all around nuisances. The proliferation of bicycle services is making it even worse.

I've never had an issue with cars, buses, taxis, trucks....all of which generally follow basic traffic rules, like stopping on red. Most bicyclists seem to not know the most basic of rules.

And I'm talking about regular bikes, not the e type!

Sidewalk and pavement mean the same thing to me too. If there's a difference, I'm unaware of what that is.

At any rate, bicycle riders should have the decency of alerting you to the fact that they are there. If they'd simply say "behind you", you'd know to look out for them. People just aren't courteous any more.

Pavement is any type of surface that is paved in some manner, be it a street, sidewalk, driveway, parking lot, walking trail, bike path, etc.

When there are Consequences to the Bike rider, THEN things will change.

As far as I am concerned, Bicycles, Unicycles, ANY wheeled conveyance used upon a public roadway should be Registered and Insured.

If the city cares enough to put in bike lanes and take parking spots Away from small businesses, The city should make sure said Bikers Obey the rules of the road.

Nothing put things MORE into perspective for me as seeing a sign at a major intersection WITH stop lights and WALK LIGHTS that warned "PEDESTRIANS WATCH FOR VEHICLES. "

I live near aa bike/walking trail. The one road I use goes right thru that area. The bikers and walkers are supposed to stop (there are stop signs posted) for car traffic, but they never do. They either keep going in front of you or give you the stink eye if you don't let them cross. Some day someone is going to get hurt.

@Citrine1 while on a bike/walking path it is common to announce "BIKE PASSING"! when you are approaching walkers/joggers from behind on the path.

I'm just an Old Skool cycler with a 10 speed. The Obnoxious Lance Armstrong types bike on the street and slow traffic there. 😉

I understand the frustration some feel about bicyclists but there really is not much you can do except petition your local government for stiffer penalties and more reinforcement of rules.

I find people walking and crossing the street while texting just as dangerous for them and for drivers.

I see nothing wrong with bike lanes and have never seen them on major highways so there's that.

I guess we just have to be more aware. Plenty of trails in my neck of the woods and honestly I do not see bicyclists on the road around here very much if at all.

@cjm61 Highly disagree about teens. It depends upon training by parents at an early age. Adults and younger children can be just as discourteous on bikes.

I rarely see bikes in my community. If and when I do they are in the street never on the sidewalk. About half of the streets have sidewalks. My cul-de-sac has no sidewalks.

What I find frustrating in the area are the narrow winding country roads that are filled with cyclists early on weekend mornings out riding. So often it is hard to see around them and slows traffic down a lot.

Many just take their bikes down to the towpath by the river or canal. There is a long bike path that they can ride on there.
