Very surprised you were given Fosamax, very old med, so many newer and improved choices out there now. Hoping you hear from people here who are using other options successfully.

I had severe osteop until I got Evenity and that increased my bone density by 12% just after one year. It will continue to go up to as much as 17% but I have yet to have a scan to confirm it but for now I'm on Prolia and will soon get a Reclast infusion to transition off of Prolia.

Lift weights, walk on an incline and take all necessary supps to help my bone density. I'm under the care of an osteop clinic where they provide everything I need to know. They did extensive blood work to determine what is going on with my bones and what it has to do with my overall health, fitness and diet. I'm fortunate to have such a place here locally.

ETA-

Fosamax, along with any other kind of bisphosphonate, will not build new bone. It only slows the further loss of bone.

My tip is to visit this website and there you'll find a a lot of very usefull info:

BoneHealthandOsteoporosis dot org

The usual recommendation is to take Calcium, Vit D 3 , Vit K2 and Magnesium. You need the K2 to direct the calcium away from your heart, very important.

Regarding vitamin supplements, I would suggest you check with your doctor before adding any to your routine. My doctor advised me to get my vitamin K from food and not supplements. She has prescribed RX strength vitamin D3 in the past.

I'm on Fosamax too. Once a week pill. You have to be very careful with your teeth. I was on Fosamax for 6months then fractured a tooth that had to be pulled couldn't be saved. they wouldn't pull it for almost 3 months time for the Fosamax to get out of the system.

Then pulled out the tooth and told to avoid Fosamax for 2-3 months then get back on it.

Make sure you take the pill with at least 8 ozs of water.

I repeat WATER ! NO COFFEE, TEA, JUICES, SOFT DRINKS, KOOL AID, COCOA. WATER, period.

Guess you know that if you take it once a week in my case, Monday. Soon as U get up take the pill with the water, don't eat breakfast for at least 30 minutes to give the pill time to absorb. I usually wait 45-60 minutes till my gut starts letting me know EAT !

I have minus 3, severe osteoporosis. long story, but drugs I was given for infection in hospital over a period of a year contributed. I went from osteopenia to severe in 8 months. I am 77, need hip replacements. No surgeon will touch me, as they are afraid of fracture. I could get replacement cemented in, no screws, but they don't recommend it. I can barely walk with walker. Pain all day. Deal is I had friends that had really horrid side effects from bone drugs, one actually died. I have phobia about taking them, now so bad. Here's the deal, they say I need Prolia, it's the only one I can take because of previous cancer and afib. That will take a year before it could build enough bone to do surgery. I would be 78-79 then. It's just to scary, then they aren't sure about risk of fracture. Deep sigh here. How is your experience with prolia? Or recast? She wanted me on the home inhjectioms which were easier, but not covered and that would be 900 or more a month. Prolia has to be taken for life. If you quit, bone starts reverting. Your scenario sounds encouraging. I have researched , and not sure.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia about 10 years ago in my early 60's. I went to a doctor my gynecologist recommended, she is a rheumatologist, and she put me on Prolia injections every 6 months. After 10 injections over 5 years I had an I fusion of Reclast. My bone density test was just done and my results were good. I fell down a flight of steps a few months ago and did not break a bone! Could have been luck or the way I rolled, but I think all those injections played a part. I also took Vitamin D and Calcium 2x a day. I will see the do. In 2 years after my ne t bone scan. Medicare will pay for bone density scan every 2 years. Good Luck.

But finally started on injection 2x a year. My osteoporosis improved to osteopenia. My rheumatologist was thrilled.I am 72 and breast cancer survivor. I had no side effects. I am ok now, but what happens later. Oh well
