Any Crocheters out there ?

I crochet a little and with expecting my first grandaughter in September (I have 2 grandsons, love them much) I want to crochet a little dress, booties, hat and blanket ( I know that's alot ) possibly for her to wear home from the Hospital and I plan to surprise my daughter with it. She's having her second C-Section.

So I've been searching for a pattern that's pretty easy. Any suggestions from seasoned crocheters on this forum would be very welcome and thanks very much !

I was an avid crocheter in my teens. That is a huge amount as a starting project. Maybe start with a blanket. Try a yarn store in your area if there is one where you can get guidance. instructions can at some times be difficult to understand

@Goodie2shoes Just a thought: Does the baby's mother know and agree that you are providing the going home outfit? I would double check. She may have other ideas. If she does, you can still make wonderful things for the baby and give them as a gift later.

@Goodie2shoes. I too, think you're being overly ambitious. You can easily teach yourself crochet stitches by using a diagram, but following crochet instructions is a can of worms. A sweater is not an easy project.

Go on "youtube" and look at crochet videos. They show how do it. I have made some afghans using "granny squares". They are fairly easy for beginners and you can use pretty color combinations to make it unique.

I knit more than I crochet but if possible I would try to find a class for beginners. As others have said that is an "ambitous" schedule. Personally, I would start with a baby blanket. Try Ravelry for patterns and suggestions.

I do find crochet directions more complicated than knitting.

@Goodie2shoes I hope you didn't take my comment in a negative way. It's just that I had our son's coming home outfit picked up from the time I was 6 months pregnant. Most of my friends did this too! Congratulations on your future granddaughter.

My daughter will love it and I think she would love to have the set as a going home outfit ! thanks for asking

I agree with..@Love my grandkids... my DIL had things picked out long before the baby was born..She did love a really soft hand made blanket that someone made for her to use on the baby carrier...When her second was born she insisted the new baby was to come home in the first sibling's outfit both were boys though..Don't get me wrong it's a wonderful idea and I love little baby girls in frilly things..especially that I had boys..I went nuts with frilly things when my Sister had the only girl in the family after 4 boys.Then there were 3 more boys...
I'm sure Mom would appreciate what ever you make...Good Luck.

Going to a good yarn store is a great idea. They are always helpful and sometimes have classes. Where I live there are classes at the local library and several of them each week. The women that attend these classes for the most part are excellent and experienced and very willing to help with any projects. Try your local Library, even once you have your project it's a lot of fun.

I agree that having the support of a class is more likely to make you successful in crocheting these baby things. Start with a blanket and see how it goes. A little sweater is a lot more complicated but with some support you might be able to do it.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I found a couple of patterns online and I'm going to look at youtube which was one suggestion. I'm going to try and post the outfit once completed

No, I don't crochet, I did knit at one point and loved it. I wish I knew how. My granddaughter crochets a storm. But I have to tell you. The little dress, booties and het will be a hit. What a treasure. If I crochet, I would make me a shawl poncho, and a bed spread. And a beanie.
KACHINA is correct ask the poster she mentioned, she's always making great things!!!

Crocheting hat and dress requires advanced skills so maybe plan on making a beautiful blanket.

You could find out mom's color scheme and go from there.

You're probably thinking heirlooms with the outfits but not sure today's mom's preserve that kind of stuff any longer.

What have you made?

I've made everything but I couldn't begin to tell you about any patterns because I don't know your skill level.

I agree going to a yarn shop for advice from seasoned crafters is the best way but even then it sounds as though you need more instruction for such an ambitious project.

A blanket is your best bet.

While it's your business if you want the baby to come home wearing what you made I also had everything selected. I think it's a tad overstepping but you do you.

Did you make anything for the grandsons?

A healthy mom and baby is my wish.Good luck.

I crocheted a bunny ear hat for my grandson when he was a baby and my daughter loved it. it was very simple and I have also crocheted a baby blanket. I'm trying to grow my talent by doing a more involved project and I have no doubt that my daughter will welcome and love what I make for my first granddaughter. If she decides she does not want the baby to wear the outfit home I have no problem with that, the baby is the blessing.

I picked crochet back up when my grandkids started coming 7 years ago. I made 2 baby blankets for each grandchild and they are still sitting in the closet in a bag. They never got used but it was the thought that counts.
