I grew up in tough times. My parents worked hard to make ends meet and raise 2 kids. Fashion was the last thing on their minds. Feels alien to me when others here talk about fashion tips and advice from their mothers. Not disparaging them at all, I am just from a different world.

My mother taught me to not dry my clothes in the dryer. The dryer ruins cloths. Hang them. To always look nice and stylish. Don't look like a ragbag, even if just running errands. I don't think I ever owned a pair of sweat pants LOL. My mom always looked good. Stylish either casual or dressed for a party.

Wasn't really just my mom, it was her aunt who worked in our uppity store . . . she bought the best we could afford but we wore it a zillion ways for at least a zillion years! I carry my Aunt Marie's rules to live by with me after all these years later, I hope she smiles down at me.

My mom was a seamstress and followed your mom's directions plus alot more. She made most of my clothes and they lasted forever. Sure miss those days.

My uncle was a peice worker at a women's clothing company called Susan Thomas. He always taught us to make sure the patterns on the seams matched

I am glad the girdle and slip days are over but had to wear "proper" undergarments. She always said when shopping, "Where are you going to wear this?" Jackets were lined and seams finished.

@PhilaLady1 I can honestly say that the number one piece of advice up until the time mom passed (2021 at the age of 94) was to save money.

Buy only on sale, save for a rainy day (even if that day arrived), don't live beyond your means....you get the idea. She was a child of The Depression and lived everyday of her life as if it were still the 1930s.

I never learned fashion or even cooking tips. We were kids that were to go find our own amusement and she never read or played with us. I felt like we (my brother and I) were a bother.

Fortunately my dad who worked full time & went to college at night majoring in physics found the time to read & play with us occasionally.

My mother was similar, @haddon9. I don't remember playing or cooking with her. I ruined her figure so she didn't have another kid.

My mother told me to always buy good shoes and not go with cheap fads. Your feet will thank you. She also told me that "your mother is your best friend." I found both to be true.

My Mom was able to pay more for her clothes when my Dad moved up in his job and always looked very pretty. She always told me to pay a bit more for things and have quality over quantity!

My mother always dressed impeccably, always. The woman had a lot of clothes. She must've shopped while I was in school. But she took me on the train Fridays after school to buy me a weekly outfit at Marshall Fields (or occasionally Gimbels). Then we'd meet my dad for dinner at a restaurant.

It was my grandmother who taught me how good clothes are made. She was a seamstress/dressmaker/pattern maker. My grandmother was always impeccably dressed too.

I don't remember my mother ever saying anything positive about my clothes. So, I guess she taught me to be hypercritical of my clothes and how I looked.

My mother taught me to buy the coordinating pieces of an outfit because that was the only way you would ever get the colors and fabrics to match.

She also taught me to buy several colors of the same item if I really really loved the fit and the price was good. She was right about that, too.

My mother was a true follower of fashion--she read W magazine. She loved clothes.

Me? Not so much. I want to look great, but don't follow fashion as such. What I learned from my mom was clothers can be a power tool, clothes tell people who you want to be, and clothes do NOT make the woman.

Love, kindness, joy, and service to others are what makes the person.
