A few things I've noticed.

*In some Euro countries there's graffiti everywhere! Beautiful ancient buildings ruined by it. Ewww.

*A budget of $2500 per month buys you very little, even in some podunk Euro towns.

I love it. It's not too different from the US rental climate, but the US House Hunters concentrates on upper end housing for sale. HHI usually is showing rental houses.

I love the real Tuscan houses, olive trees and a bread oven, but usually no refrigerator. Beautiful houses. Always a lovely bathroom, too.

It makes me smile when people on "regular" house hunters say they are looking for a "Tuscan kitchen". Probably the same lady would be wrathful if her prospective houses didn't have refrigerators the size of Rhode Island. Americans are spoiled. Tuscany is a lifestyle, not a house-design. And the houses are old and patina-ed with time.

I love the Asian HH episodes, because that is something I would really like to do.

There are places to live cheaply in Europe, but it won't be in any of the great cities or regions. Most people want to be within walking distance of everything from restaurants, stores and schools to clubs and bars for the young singles. It's gonna cost ya. As the saying goes, location, location, location.

One of my European friends has a ton of money ($700 plus hotel rooms, $60 meals before wine...etc.), but when her family bought a home in France, they moved just a smidge out of the chic area and saved a bundle. She'd rather put the money toward lavish vacations than plant the family in the middle of the hot spots that get all the tourists in the summer.

What you have to remember is that the American dollar is very weak right now so $2500 is not that much in Euro's or Pounds.

Also most of the shows are set in capital cities. $2500 would get you a tiny apartment in London or Paris but a lovely house in a small town outside the capital.

The Pound used to cost over $2, and the Euro was at $1.55 or so. Both are well under that figure right now even with Russia, Brazil, China, Australia and others trying to dump the USD. That could change of course, but right now it's not bad at all.

Now where we've taken a real beating is against the Australian Dollar.

To me, it's very interesting. It's seeing a little bit of areas and architecture that I will never get to see for real. Sort of like, seeing how the other half lives, as they say. I know not everyone dreams of having a little flat in London, or a cute apartment in France, or a wonderful villa in Italy, etc., etc., but I do! It will never happen, but I read and see movies and think --- awww, what if? Yes, a lot of the places are terribly expensive and these people have money. But, that's t.v. I enjoy the show. As far as these house shows go, I think it's actually my favorite.
