The Biggest Change in QVC I've Seen

QVC used to try to sell products that fit the viewers and consumers lifestyle. Now they want to tell us what our lifestyle should be and think we buy for their image of us.

I have been a QVC shopper almost since the very beginning. My mom before me even. And what I see is QVC and other companies and the world in general.

Retail outlets and other groups that affect our lifestyle (charities in particular) now think THEY dictate what lifestyle we aspire to. They think they know better how to spend our money, and what our values should be and sell and promote that to us.

Businesses decide what our donated money should go to. Do they ask us? No. A lot of our money is spent at some groups discretion, not our own.

I think this is beginning to wear on people, and I think people are starting to buy less when retailers push things to us by their image of how we should live and how we should behave rather than thinking about our real lives and what we want, would use and need and what would be a good value for us.

By now (age 75) I know what my "lifestyle" is and am not influenced by any "influencer" aka salesperson. A lot of people want to be told what to do. I am not one.

You are correct, the development is coming from their push to BUY BUY BUY

and their scenarios of what they say we NEED NEED NEED

I don't watch and if I do on a sick day I mute the sound, I tune them out lol.

Watched QVC on accident from day 1 (just had a baby and up all the time).

They were actually a consumer advocate in terms of what you were buying.

Kathy Levine would say on all shows and items that this might not be for you if you don't like such and such. She would list a litany of things that you needed to be aware of what you were purchasing. They gave great discounts on well made items you cound not find in store. It was not a scream fest and huge push sales. Nobody picked their feet or shaved their armpits for views. That's the biggest change.

I kind of agree--but then this is a whole new way of life now than even 10 years ago---and these companies NEED to stay relevent to compete and/ or succeed--especialy with social media surrounding everything in life, whether we like it or not. I personally, am not on social media--except for here, so I don't know much of what is hot and what isn't--but I do know that it is the all time monster influencer---lots of exposure, lots of info and TONS of money to be had. I'm not much influenced by misconceptions of what my life style should be---I know what I need to do, for the most part. No one dictates what I should be spending my $$ on or how I live my life---to me, it's more annoying than frustrating---but I do think that it has its good points too. Fortunately, you can still turn it all off, which I do frequently. And now that chaos is rampant--I think most people will be changing their way of life--they will have to--all this is affecting EVERYBODY!!! Just need to be vigilant and do alot of research these days.

Really good analysis and this has been happening for years with nearly all retailers.

My favorite heels for work were Easy Spirits. I asked at a store one day if they had a popular style in stock? Clerk said no, customers ask all the time. They only carry what Corporate tells them to carry.

Excellent observation, @Sooner. I started shopping with HSN in the Capodimonte and London Blue Topaz days. I swear that's all they had spinning around on a pedestal. LOL. I was jealous that my sister-in-law got QVC but I didn't at the time. That changed when we moved.

As for the causes various companies support with a portion of my money, I try to investigate first but I don't always know where it's going so I remain blissfully ignorant. However, when I do find out a company's values and what they support, it will affect my decision to purchase or not purchase. I don't care how much I want something, I won't patronize a company that's going to use my money for something I'm personally against.

QVC has always been driven by sales. Nothing has really changed. Perhaps they are more aggressive in trying to get us to buy. We are free to continue to resist.

This what built them but they seem to have lost their way. This is why I started buying from HSN all those years ago.

I am not sure I agree with that evaluation because if you look at advertising going back many decades, it’s geared toward the lifestyle they think their customers will aspire to. That’s what marketing and advertising does. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have no problem with a company giving back to the community and I can make a decision whether I choose to support.

As for prices, qvc has never been the overall cheapest option.

I was just wandering around in Dillards a few weeks ago and this sales clerk who I guess was bored kept following me around suggesting things. She suggested I should carry a tote bag instead of a small crossbody, then she said I would look great in some kind of hooker sandals since I'm short instead of my sneakers. She just kept following me. After the shoe comment I just walked out. I guess she had a quota to meet but I certainly wasn't going to help here.

I see it as a take it or leave it attitude. If you don't buy it, someone else will. I suppose current lifestyles do take over but it isn't mine. Years ago I had item numbers written all over the place. I do miss affordable jewelry the most. And pleasant hosts.

You actually had a sales clerk follow you! Good lord, I thought those went away a long time ago. Be grateful someone is interested in your shopping needs. All these stores that I shopped for in the past are only hiring cashiers so nobody is interested in me personally. I have to many times hunt down a stock clerk to ask a question. Thank Dillards for being old fashioned.

I don’t care for the personal care products or health advice by some hosts. I am also turned off by the over 50 campaign. Those of us over 50, did it with ease but I think the hosts over 50 have the issues with aging not the viewers.

@Sooner QVC has never been a main source of clothing for me. Image has nothing to do with my decision. I just know that as long as I can find a few items locally that actually fit both my body and my current life style, I will support local businesses or the workers in them.

I have enough wearable outfits for a long time. In the past I might have donated them and bought new for myself. Now I like figuring out new ways to pair the separates I have although I do keep a list of the specific items I could use. Absent those few items, I now come home from a shopping trip having spent nothing!

@Sooner. I think your paranoia has kicked in, I don't see that at all. QVC has always suggested that we could wear a garment to a barbecue, hay ride, apple picking, or to the prom. We simply ignore and wear it as we wish. My lifestyle could use some oomph but I don't see it changing much. Things in our modern times are always evolving, for better or worse.

Stores support certain charities which I also ignore and donate instead to the ones I prefer. Don't tell me you feel obligated to give to one a store supports?

I know I will be buying less as prices rise because I don't support whats going on economically. Many businesses tettering on the brink will go over the edge into bankruptcy. Farmers will be hurt and may lose their farms or not be able to afford the equipment they need. Rough times ahead.

I don't think the Q really stands for Quality OR Value much anymore like it once did. And the hosts...don't even get me started on their current (apparently corporately approved) lack of class and professionalism. Sigh.
