Johnny Mathis retires at 89!

He ends his tour, Voice of Romance, on May 18 in Englewood, NJ due to age and memory issues. His reviews for this tour have been very good.........one of the reviews stated: "Mathis' performance “the most beautifully romantic concert in a theater in recent memory.”

I have enjoyed Johnny Mathis since I first heard "Chances Are", I've been fortunate enough to be able to attend several of his live performances and have been overwhelmed by his performance, professionalism, kindness and voice. He, just, sings, no jokes, no pitter patter, just wonderful songs and a lovely romantic voice.

A true gentleman.

A statement posted to Facebook reads: “As many of you may already be aware, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year."

"So, it's with sincere regret that due to Mr Mathis's age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts.”

I didn't realize he was still performing---at 89? Wow what a guy!! One of my very favorites, I remember hearing him when I was a kid--love him and Nat King Cole and Tony Bennet.

I can still see me back in my room listening to Jonny Mathis on a 45 record. He was singing Chances Are and it was wonderful! I guess we grew old together, though he’s 10 yrs older than me . It was a wonderful time in the 50’d for sure.

I was never fortunate to see him perform.
'I also played his records on Lp's and 45's.

It must have been in the 70's that I saw him. There was a theater on the El Camino Real in Palo Alto , My husband and I decided to have a drink there and Mr. Mathis was signing autographs.
It was also a hotel.

Early in the 60's I was one of many in the same Hotel waiting to get a glimpse of the Beatles. They weren't performing, just staying there. I did get a glimpse of them!

My mother got a better view. She was standing at the edge of the parking lot when their limousine entered, it slowed down, a window went down and two of the Beatles blew her a kiss.

When she told my sister and I about it, she was as excited as we were. Good times!

No one sings ballads like Johnny. I still have his original Christmas album on vinyl.

The Twelfth of Never is beautiful and many others. He is the best.

The first time I heard & seen him was on Bandstand (the Philly Market Street D*ck Clark yrs). I thought he was so pretty.

Yes, all the great singer are gone or going. They just used their voices and the backgound music. Not all the noise and hype like most singers today.

I am his age and our school in San Francisco were rivals in sports.

It w.as a great time in San Francisco and schools were safe. He and I are the same age and same era and went to High school in San Francisco.

Good memories.

Lots of good singers then.
