beware egg surcharge on receipt

well just a heads up when eating out. took Gr.D out for breakfast yesterday and when bill came i saw 1.50 egg surcharge at bottom of bill. i called the waitress over and she said yes due to the price of eggs. theres a sign on the wall overthere. i said i did not look for a sign and waitress did not mention it when we ordered.

she went to her manager and they took it off. she said next time you come in please know that there is a surcharge. can you believe it?

Waffle House and Dennys Both have a surcharge. It's been on the news. But they Should have a clear announcement of that. Maybe a note clipped to the menus like the daily special.

I think it's understandable, especially for breakfast places, given the increased cost of eggs lately. Otherwise it would be a financial hit to that kind of establishment. However, they should put a notice on the table or a sticker in the menu. I wouldn't fuss over an extra $1.50 but I know a couple of people who would.

Some places are adding an upcharge for using credit cards and they only have the notice on the front door. Who reads that as they're walking in?

Yes, I've heard of this happening, but haven't noticed it the last time I had breakfast out a couple weeks ago. About the credit card surcharge, I have noticed that as my vet adds that to a bill. I pay by check, so it's not an issue for me. I actually pretty much pay by old fashioned cash for everything when making a purchase.

A restaurant needs to cover their cost for food, when they pay more they need to charge more.

Thanks for the heads up. On a positive note, when I was at BJ's yesterday they were charging $16.99 for 3 dozen extra large, grade A eggs (2 packages of 18 eggs). Last week the price was $21.99, so a $5 price reduction in just 1 week. While they seemed to be pretty well-stocked, they still had a limit of 2 packs per customer. Maybe restaurants will be able to drop their egg surcharges soon.

Our vet does too, @catter70, but there's a sign at the reception desk where we pay.

Yes, I believe it and fully support it if you were at a restaurant/cafe that is not part of a big chain . You ate the steak so pay for it.

It has been on the news (TV and radio) here as well. The local Mom and Pop restaurants I follow on Facebook have said something as well. One has said they won't increase customer prices no matter how high the price of eggs get.

YES I can believe it.

It has been all over the news and I don't blame the establishments one bit.

They had it clearly posted. I would not have asked/requested/insisted they take it off. I would have paid it.

Oh yes, have heard of that and totally expected it. The place we-- use to-- go to just jimmied up their prices so while I understand--we won't be going very often,

However, I did get eggs with my Fresh order from AMZ--the 18 count---I know!! my loan FINALLY was approved--and every one of them were lovely, whole, unbroken ones--- the last 3 orders had missing eggs and 4 or more cracked in each carton--which I got my $$ back---Nice!!!

It is understandable, the restaurants cannot absorb the increased costs. But as my husband always notes, when the price goes back down most likely they will not remove the surcharge.

@branny I know weeks ago eggs were at an all time high so I could understand the surcharge. However, I do agree with @We rescue cats , most likely many establishments will keep the surcharge as long as possible. Egg prices have dropped quite a bit yet there are still surcharges out there.

My husband and I had breakfast yesterday, my husband had a 4 egg omelet and I had 2 eggs, no surcharge. I also purchased eggs last week and they were much cheaper than they have been in months.
