The Silent Generation

I was born in 1944 two years before the Baby Boomer generation. I often wondered if my generation had a name so I Googled it.

People born between 1928 and 1945 are (according to AI on Google) the Silent Generation. I never knew this. Known for conformity, civic, cautious, stable, etc.

I found this interesting.

I'm a Joneser, part of Generation Jones.

My siblings are Boomers, but I came along a little later and always felt I was a different generation.

That's why I was so happy to see that those born between 1954 and 1965 had been "reclassified."

Definitely a Joneser.

I never heard of a Joneser?? I was born in 1960 and have always considered myself the younger end of the boomers. That's interesting, I'll have to research it.

I'll stick with Baby Boomers. I don't like the sound of Generation Jones. What does that mean? Are we the generation that must keep up with the Joneses? No thanks.

Interesting @Winkk I have never heard of this. I have very young parents. I was born in Dec. 1962, while my parents were born in 1944 and 1945. I never liked being classifed as part of the same generation. They were definitely baby boombers. I never considered myself one. This makes much more sense to me. Thanks for the information.

I Googled Generation Jones. It's a micro-generation often considered a subset of Baby Boomers. People born between 1954 and 1965. A little bit of Boomer and a little Gen X.

@just bee That's very interesting about Generation Jones. I never really felt like a Boomer, but the prevailing wisdom said that I was. I always felt different from Boomers and like I was on the "cusp" of a different generation.

Nice to know that my generation has been redefined. Makes sense to me.

Exactly!

That chart could use a little tweaking (for instance, I'd say cassettes instead of 8-Track), but it's a snapshot of some of the differences.

@Winkk I think they also call you "the Greatest Generation", the WWII generation..after that great book, of that name, by Tom Browkaw. But, I have heard of the Silent Generation also.

My mom was born 1928.

I think your generation was a good one..."civic, cautious, stable"...it was a different time...people were taught to "do the right thing", be courteous, consciencious, hard-working. I'm a '57 Boomer, I hate to say it but that generation...got a bit spoiled by the good times and rebellious. Still "resisting" it all, broke some barriers yes, but I think over-corrected in some ways, and it became about me, me, me.

I used to learn a lot from those of your generation when taking care of my mom and visiting her in her assisted living...I used to think I'll be sorry when this generation is gone. I always loved when I'd go listen to music they'd have weekly there...when the patriotic songs were sung they loved it, sang loudly, put their hands to heart...anyway, I know there's good and bad in all, and you can't generalize ...but as a whole, I have great respect for your generation.

The Greatest Generation was 1901-1927. That would include my mother, father and stepfather.

The Silent Generation was 1928-1945.

My mother's first child, my eldest sister, was born in 1940 -- part of the Silent Generation.

Oh ok, got it! Tks. Silent Generation had some of the same sensibilities as the Greatest Generation...again...different times, for sure.

I'm a boomer. 1960. But reading how some say they never really felt like a baby boomer, I'm not sure I can relate. How does a baby boomer feel? I never heard of Generation Jones myself. I will read up on it.

@SloopJohnB I'll try to answer that question. I have a sister that is six years older than me. A true Boomer. Her and I were lightyears apart on so many things pertaining to the world and society.

We dressed differenty and never listened to the same music. Different hairstyles. Our styles were just obviously different. She was waaay more obedient and timid than I was. I was more of a free spirit and rebel. It was just the sign of the times. Womans lib, Viet Nam, Protests, the first Earth Day, and questioning things and not just accepting the status quo.

Poor mom lol. She had two distinct personalities of children in her home. But, I will say that mom let each of us express our individuality.

@Queen of shop Good points you made and thank you for sharing. On the other hand, my kids are slightly over a year apart. In fact when we used to go shopping and push them in a double stroller, people thought they were twIns since they were so close in age. I guess everything is relative, no pun intended. LOL
