GO, AMISH TEENAGERS!

So heartwarming. A group of Amish teenagers and young men, from Ohio, Indiana and New York, have converged on Tennessee. They came there to join relief efforts, and help rebuild houses for the devastated flood victims of last year's Hurricane Helene.

Jerry D. Miller, of the New Order Amish group, explains that the eleven young men have been busy in both construction, and massive clean-up efforts.

While in Washington County, the group has been staying in a local Methodist church, with house parents who have accompanied them--

Without knowing much about it, I'm assuming that the New Order Amish do permit use of power tools.

These great guys will stay an entire month to help the community. How super.

Heartwarming. I live close to Lancaster, PA and we have a large Amish community.

The Amish community here in Ohio where I live came out to help when the tornado hit this area last March. I believe this is a wonderful thing for them to do.

But be aware that the Amish are big into puppy mills and do not take care or treat their animals very good at all, which includes their horses as well. I have seen it with my own eyes.

We have a kitchen table and chairs, and a bedroom, set that were all made by the Amish. Best furniture ever. VERY well made and has lasted us for over 40 years.

Good for these guys to go down there and help. They will be well built houses.

It's never good to think all people of an ethnicity, nationality or religion are alike, and all good or all bad.

These individuals did something very good and I applaud their efforts.

The Amish don't drive cars, but they will bother neighbors to drive them anywhere they want to go and they also pay for rides from people who will drive them.

They also travel by train, boats and planes. They just don't drive cars.

But, secretly, many young Amish have cars in their barns and they do drive. They have cell phones too. They pretty much are free to do as they wish until they are baptized as young adults.

Some continue with the modern ways.

They built many homes in my neighborhood with power tools. They even used my electricity to power them.

We have a very large population of the in PA. I see them shopping at our local discount grocery store every week.

The women arrive in vans and buy lots of canned goods and pickles...lots of pickles. I always thought they made their own...I guess they buy them too.

They don't want to be photographed, but will not fight with you if you do take their picture. They will turn away or turn around if they're aware of what you're doing.

You can't not allow anyone to take your picture unless they ask you first.

@Carmie Rumspringa is the Amish term that means "running around time." I've read dozen of books about the Amish.

I know for a fact that many younger Amish continue to use modern convienvences long after their running around time.

They get arrested for DUI with their buggies and with cars. They own cell phones.

Many are moving away from their strict upbringing.

Women and girls are reporting sexual abuse that is not being stopped by the elders in their community. Their arrests are being reported and they are doing time for their crimes.

They aren't much different than people in other communities anymore.
