Another Air Disaster

Delta airlines in Toronto, Canada. Had an "incident". Plane ended up upside down but all passengers are accounted for, 8 injured with 1 critical. Flight originated in Minneapolis.

Well, at least it was a crash where the majority of the people walked away from the plane. If I had to choose a crash landing, I would take that. I always wear my seat belt even when the fasten seat belt light is off.

No, thankfully it happened in Toronto and probably due to bad weather.

I'm going to guess that they either had a landing gear collapse or encountered an icy runway, which led to them going off the runway, catching a wing tip in the ground and causing it to flip. But that's just a guess based on the images I've seen and commentary by a passenger who was shooting video of the evacuation. I'm not an expert by any means. Conditions at the time of landing were horrible. Gusting winds, blowing snow, crosswinds. Kudos to the flight attendants for getting all 80 passengers out of the aircraft.

None the less, I've got a flight on this same type, CRJ-900 with Endeavor Air (the Delta partner) this weekend and I have no qualms about it. The aircraft was introduced in 1991 and hadn't had a fatal accident until the AA crash in DC.

Updated 15 injuries, 3 critical. It was a Delta jet.

Same with me. I do not take my seat belt off while flying. Luckily, the last few flights that I have been on. I have not had to get up to use the "flying port a potty".

This plane's wings came off somewhere, I thought I heard them say. Wonder how this lost it's wings, AND was upside down???

Im never been to peachy-keen on Take Off and Landing.

One time when landing in Las Vegas, the runway was sooo darn hot, it was repelling the plane. The Pilot couldnt land the plane!! That wasnt too fun at all.

My daughter is a pilot(captain) with a regional airline. She has flown into that airport many times. Upon first look she said the weather conditions didn't look like anything she hasn't landed in. She is interested to find out what happened but said most likely a combination of wind and an icy runway.

They first need to do an investigation into the conditions of the runway, weather, wind, ice, etc. which sound like they all were horrible. Someone mentioned a snowdrift. After watching the Daytona 500 yesterday, the way that car #60 went up and went airborne, well I can see a plane doing that if it hit an ice chunk, drift, etc. Oh and I think they said it's missing a wing?

You ask how many is that? They mentioned it on air a few times and I was surprised because to me it seems like an awful lot since we are only in February. Well, the numbers for (just) years 2023 and 2024 are horrendous. I only went back two years as they were most current to this year, you can check more, but you also have to take into account whether accidents were small or large planes, as well as privately owned or commercial, etc. They break it all down for you to see in a number of different sites. Yet flying (they say) is safe lol. So check the stats out if these numbers seem high to you right now.

Still a sad situation while waiting to see if everyone will pull through, but so thankful that fabulous captain and crew were able to get everyone out to safety so quickly. Kudos to them for having the knowledge and quick response.

ETA: @JoyFilled Warrior After reading the reply by @spumoni99 , it sounds like the weather conditions were NOT as horrible as some have made it out to sound on tv. So it will be interesting to see the final details.

I saw that airplane upside down on the runway.. I was surprised to see another airplane incident..I have a terrible fear of flying because you have no control . I know they say flying is safer than driving. I am not a believer.

What caused the plane to flip and catch fire was not immediately clear but the investigation is already underway, sources told ABC News. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will lead the investigation, the FAA said. Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are assisting.

While the cause is unknown, the crash unfolded during blowing snow and strong wind gusts in the region. Winds reached 40 mph on the ground and were even stronger several hundred feet in the air.

Ornge, which provides medical transport, said three people suffered critical injuries: one child, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s.

The other 12 people taken to hospitals have mild injuries, Peel Regional Paramedics Services said.

The Delta jet originated in Minneapolis and went belly up in Toronto. Visibility was said to be limited but that wouldn't seem to explain what happened.

@OneHappyHiker I know nothing about flying but I would guess maybe a strong gust of wind caught the wing and caused the plane to flip over? Thank god nobody was killed.

That's a first for me. My BIL was a Delta pilot (RIP Arthur) and I do know that he trained all the time in flight simulators for all kinds of emergencies, but I dunno if something like this! Wish he has still here so I could get his opinion.
