Beautiful avocados

On Saturday, I made my biweekly trip to Sam's Club for my haul. While there, I grabbed two bags of beautiful avocados - yeah they were pricey, but when I considered the tray of cookies was just as pricey, I went for the healthy option. So two bags, 5 large avocados each, about 17$ and change for both. They are now perfectly ripe and I am sitting here at my desk eating one, chopped, with salt, everything bagel and a squirt of lime. Delicious. So typically I will lose one or two to over ripening if I haven't eaten them fast enough.

Looked up how to keep them staying fresh for up to 4 to 5 days after ripening. One source suggested dunking them whole into a pot of water and placing in the fridge. When I get home, I will try that to see if it actually works.

Anyone have other ways of stretching the days they stay OK before "melting down."

They turn brown almost instantly. You can make a ton of guac, but then that will also turn brown

I often try to buy hard avocados, so I can allow them to ripen at home. From the grocery store, I put them in a fruit bowl on the counter. I watch them closely--sometimes they are ready to go in the refrigerator the very next day. I want them to just start being a lttle soft to the touch. They then live in the refrig until we use them.

Seems when I buy a *green net* bag, there's always one that's close to being ready to cut into. The rest are usually hard as a rock.

I do prefer buying them separate.

I never pay attention to price, and I buy organic only. That said, I would never buy more than I know I can use. That would be a waste of money for me.

i don't like them when they have those little brown dots in them or worse, big brown areas. Am not a fan of guac.

If I cut into one and we share a half in a salad, I put the other half face down in the lettuce, will last till the next day. If it seems it's not going to, I'll use the whole avo then and there.

They are something we have every day.

I always store my fresh avocados unpeeled in large jars filled with water and in the refrigerator. When the level drops from removing one, I top it off so the remaining avocados are covered. If they're hard when they go in, take one out to sit for a day or two before using. If ripe when you began, use as needed without waiting.

You can also peel, cut, and freeze them, to save for smoothies.

Guacamole will last in fridge 2 days if you add lemon juice, and throw one of the pits back in. But it must be sealed airtight. I have glass containers from pampered chef that steel airtight. I have left guacamole in there for a couple days, good as new.

recommends. Then:

Wash the avocados. (Yes, you need to wash them.)

Carefully cut an avocado in half using a sharp knife. Then, remove the seed gently using a spoon.

Peel the skin away from the fruit halves, just like a banana. You can also scoop out the flesh with a small spoon.

Slice into quarters or leave them halved. Place them into a resealable bag (removing as much air as possible) and freeze for up to one month. If desired, use the California Avocado Commission’s tip to brush the avocado slices or halves with lemon juice and wrap them in plastic before placing them in a resealable bag.

You can also freeze whole, unpeeled avocados. There is no need to wrap them—just stick them in the freezer for up to two weeks. After the avocados thaw, use them immediately.

i would not use over ripe avocados, and I would dip or brush with lemon. I would wrap tight in Saran Wrap, then put in air tight bag or container. When you freeze, and then thaw,,they need to be used right away. But it works. Chickenbutt used to do this a lot

I think I will change the water daily. The article didn't mention any bacterial concerns. And these of course would be unpeeled.

Thanks all for your responses 😀

QUICK UPDATE

My daughter just told me that's a hack going around and like a lot of other stuff...it isn't true. As a few of you said, due to the potential for listeria and other pathogens. So ok out of the H2O they will come and into the crisper. She said to me you never fall for stuff like that because you are pretty savvy with health information...what ever made you think it was ok... oh I dunno sounded reasonable 🤦🏻‍♀️
