My mother had a knack for mixing idioms. One of our favorites:

He came out smelling like a bandit.

(A mix of "he made out like a bandit" and "he came out smelling like a rose.")

She had a million of 'em.

When things went really bad, she would say cry, kick scream for today but tomorrow put on your big girl panties and move forward. Nothing or no one is worth your tears.

"You get what you pay for". She was a professional seamstress and would always look at any clothing I bought. I still hear her say that whenever I get something on sale, and wonder how long it will last.

My mother used to crack me up with her sayings. One that has always stayed with me is

" If you fall out of the tree and break your legs, don't come running back to me."

We had many huge trees on our property. One was a winter pear tree that had to be at least 30 feet high. I used to climb the tree almost to the top and sit up there where the branches formed a perfect v shaped chair and read a book. That tree was made for climbing.

My husband has a super 8 film of me climbing that tree and back down again. My kids used to get a kick out of it.

I remember that saying now when I climb a ladder or step stool and it still cracks me up.

Mother didn't have sayings as such, but taught me to go to pray and go to church, stand up for myself, and do a good job then get a lot for my money. But she also did say:

If I like it enough to buy it, I want two of them.

When ever I was in any uncomfortable situation, argument, etc, with another person she would say.....Now who would you rather be...you or them....if you can say ..I would rather be me...you know you have done the right thing and can have peace with yourself.

I can't tell you how many times I have said this to myself and will always remember it.

She would always say, when someone is having a hard time and down and out, don't put your foot on their neck. That expesssion stays with me and resonates.

She would also say, don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing. Took me years to figure that one out but I totally 'get it" now.

My mom was a wondeful person. and I miss her.

This is a good thread and my mom was a spitfire and there's too many to mention, but this was always my favorite...kind of resonates with your mom's saying @smoochy

"Go ahead and let the man think he's head of household...just always remind him you are the neck and the neck turns the head". Priceless - she was always rolling her eyeballs at my dad 😆
