A PAINTER OF WINTER SCENES

"A Farm, Last Rauys" 1913. Love this one of his, above.

Clarence Gagnon, 1881- 1942, was a Canadian painter who often depicted scenes of the Laurentian mountains and the countryside of eastern Quebec.

His father was French Canadian, his mother English.

"Village in the Laurentian Mountains" 1924

"Hare in Winter". The way he rendered the fur on this bunny, makes me want to pet his softness...

"Winter Morning in Baie-Saint-Paul"

"Le Train, en hiver"

"March in the Birch Woods" 1919

Brrr! Yet, as "mixed feelings" as I have about snow, his depictions have a distilled beauty.

He could definitely paint in other seasons, too--

"Katherine" 1904

"Golden Autumn, Laurentians". 1921

"The Painter's Young Wife, Ile d'Orleans"

Really like his work.

He's so talented. He really captures that frosty, bluish light that's reflected off the snow. I especially love the first one of your first post and the first one of your second post.....

He had a modern take using realism and impressionism to create his paintings.

@SilleeMee. He did paint in the modern era. Some of his work reminds me of Colorado.

I did not know this artist so I looked up his biography.

These paintings are beautiful and the ones depicting mountains and/or snow are serene for me.

Thanks, @Cakers3 -- I meant to thank you for your kind comment, but neglected to! I had to look him up too-- it was interesting to see that he had a Paris studio as well.

And wonderful paintings he did in Italy and throughout Europe. But the rural Quebec scene seemed to have his heart....

LOVE winter snow scenes. He has done some nice ones.

@jubilant , I have one winter scene that I do keep up all year round. It was in our son's room growing up, now the spare room. "Learning to Skate" by Canadian primitive artitst, Alberto de Castro:

He's another one who celebrates winter, like in "Joy of Working"--

I like your question about seasonal art. I have a glowing art print in the dining room, which depicts a tight grove of trees in full autumn color. Enjoy it all year round.

Do you have any winter scenes out?

I love these pictures !!!! Winter and Autumn scenes are my favorites and this very talented painter captures the beauty of winter, especially the village and winter morning, just beautiful. The Birch Woods and Katherine, Golden Autumn, so pretty! Thanks for sharing this, I admire and love Gagnon's works and seeing it all for the first time!!!!

@Oznell No, I don't have any out but have seen a couple I would like to have. I love those paintings you have! I guess I just thought to myself...Why not? We have Spring, Summer, and Fall paintings out all year. Why not winter! Ha! It only took me 75 years to even consider it!

@jubilant , I love winter snow scenes. I have a round holiday cookie tin lid (I put a magnet on the back of it) that I keep on the front of the refrigerator all year. It is about five inches in diameter. The scene is of an overcast snowy winter farm landscape.

@QVCisFun , I'm pretty sure the activity in the last one, "Joy of Working", is a family and their friends maple-sugaring in the woods. That's what it looks like to me. I've been trying, but it's hard to get info on it-- some of the gallery stuff is behind a sort of a paywall that blurs stuff out.

The happy teamwork and joy that you reference in these 'naive' works is exactly what appeals to me too! So much of de Castro's winter scenes are like that-- sledding, skating, making snow angels...

I have a Thomas Kincaid. Colonial house and lights with a Snowman. It is a favorite. Oh and of course lots of snow.
