Where can I ... ?

Hi, y'all!

I live in Washington state, east of Seattle. I recently lost about 40 lbs and that means I have some really nice clothes that don't fit any more and I'd like to donate them. However I can't seem to find any organizations that will take them.

Does anyone know what/will accept them? Most of them are in pretty good shape and I'd hate to have to just toss them. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me find a home for them.

Most churches collect clothing, shoes and accessories. That’s what I do with our new and used items.

And even your local American Legions will have a donation box on their property.

@GoneButNotForgotten In my area here in PA, Purple Heart will pick them up if you schedule a curbside pickup. They also have green drop locations.

I stopped donating to Goodwill and now drop my clothing in local donation

bins. They accept shoes and clothing and usually you can find them near stores,

gas stations, etc.

@GoneButNotForgotten. Check with women's shelters in your area and the Salvation Army. I don't think any place will pick them up anymore.

@GoneButNotForgotten Use your search bar for "women's shelters" in your city or county. I'm also in WA state and know there are a number of them in my area.

When I stopped working, I donated many nice outfits that I had worn to the office. I donated to an organization called Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA). They were so glad to get the clothing. By my third trip to donate more clothes, the volunteers were greeting me before I could get out of the car.

It was good to know that they would be able to use the items I donated.

And my husband was a runner. He also had many sneakers. Some he liked more than others. So he donated about 10 pairs of sneakers that didn't seem to feel comfortable while he ran. He took them to Salvation Army. The man accepting the donation was actually excited to get them. He said they would go to good use and that they could always use them.

So those are the 2 organizations I think of when I donate anything.

When we lived in NV we used to donate a lot to Vietnam Vets. They would pick up and took most items. But I don't think they are everywhere.

Now we donate to a local church here in Chicago. Also the Salvation Army although they only pick up furniture. Clothing would have to be brough to one of their stores.

I know it's hard to give away things--go figure!

Green Drop Donations will pick them up at your house. You have a choice of organizations they will be donated to.

@GoneButNotForgotten I know a lot of womens shelters would take them as others have mentioned. If no luck, consider good will, programs like dress for success that provide clothing for women that may not have adequate clothing for job interviews. Also some womens prisons( not county jails) need clothing for when inmates are being released to go home. They usually just give one pair of pants, shirt or sweater but need something to wear out the door.. Check with the salvation army , lots of natural disasters anymore . Goodwill is an excellent option. A lot of churches have donation " closets" that provide clothing and various items to those in need due to circumstances such as loss of home due to fire, loss of job, etc.

. . Also in my town are donation bins in various places. In my area there are several second hand stores some with very nice clothing that take your donted items and resell them to support their specific charity such as housing and treatment for homeless alcholic men. If nothing else check with a consignment store to see if you can sell them. Good luck. Glad you want to donate your items and not send to a landfill.

I live across the pond from you on the Kitsap Peninsula. Recently I donated some gently used clothing at Sallys.

I agree with others who suggested contacting womens shelters .

In our community we have a "Fishline " which runs the foodbank and they also have a Thrift store . It is another go to for me to donate clothing since the proceeds stay in the comminity ( unlike Goodwill)...

I don't think it is difficult to locate agencies or ministries that accept used clothes. I googled this for places that accept clothing in my area and pages of agencies and ministries came up. I would check with women's shelters, churches that have clothing closets, and ministries that serve the homeless and families in need. There is a great need out there for these items. I would steer clear of business that resell your clothes.
