I found this picture on Facebook and it immediately took me back to shopping on the main street of our town with my grandmother when I was little.

...such sweet, fond memories.

I long for such times as this. My Main Street was so cozy and busy at Christmas. We had a G.C. Murphy, and it was 3 floors. They sold almost everything, but my best memory of it was smelling popcorn as soon as I walked into the store. We had lots more stores, and Christmas time was magical

Love the sweet memories of Christmas as a child. There was only one Santa in my small town and he came to town on Friday after Thanksgiving he had a little spot to sit in a store called Western Auto which sold all kinds of toys. I can still see all the radio flyer red wagons, tricycles and bicycles. They would sellout of them.🎅🏻

@susankate My small town had a store called J.J. New berry and the whole store always had that sweet smell of popcorn. You just had to get a bag as soon as you walked in and during the Holidays it was free.🍿

Nothing can replace those days and memories. Those of us who can remember know they were better times...at least I think so....simpler times!

My favorite memory was driving to Boston on a Sunday (stores were closed) around 1950. I think it was Jordan Marsh store that had a beautiful animated display of Santa's workshop. There was a mailbox out on the street that you could put in a letter to Santa and it went up on a conveyor belt underground and would go up into the window. It was especially nice if it was snowing. Candy stores must have been open because I remember my dad stopping to buy barley lollipops. They were so good.

I can remember how exciting it was at Christmas when my grandma told me we were going to get dressed, catch a streetcar, and go to "town" to see Santa and shop.

When I watched her stick a can of Campbell's Soup in a pot on the stove for my grandfather's dinner, I could not contain myself as I knew we would have lots of time to spend there and also go to Isaly's for dinner.

I so treasure all of those wonderful memories.

@Mersha The can of Campbell's Soup gave me a good laugh. I bet your Grandpa enjoyed it and probably enjoyed just having time alone and not having to go shopping.🥰🥫🫕

@frenchie I also remember seeing the animated Christmas display at Jordan Marsh in Boston. It was so magical to see all the stores so beautifully decorated for Christmas.

When my first daughter was a toddler, we took her to see the display at Jordan Marsh. Later, all those displays were moved to the Northshore Shopping Center in Peabody, MA. They were starting to look a little worn out.

In recent years, those original Jordan Marsh displays were aquired by Jordan's Furniture in Avon, MA. (No affiliation with Jordan Marsh).

Everything has been renovated and is on display at the furniture store. They also bake and sell the original recipe, famous Jordan Marsh blueberry muffins. They have an ice skating rink there too. It seems like it would be great family fun.

We have never gone there, since my children are all grown up.

They did get to see the displays when they were at the shopping mall.

@happilyretiredgirl You brought back a great memory for me! My grandpa was an Allstate insurance agent and his office was in a section of a Sears store (no clue why ). Anyway, this was where we went to see Santa every year. I remember thinking that my grandpa must have been friends with Santa since he came to his place of business every Christmas!

@happilyretiredgirl You are so right! I thought, at the time, he would be sad because he was missing all the fun.

He was probably at home thrilled that both of us would be gone for hours.

The closest we get to times like this is in Grass Valley California during Cornish Christmas. We were just there Friday. It's everything like past Christmases. Carolers, Santa and Mrs claus, hot cocoa, vendors selling hand crafted items walking on cobble stone street etc. Small shops with unique items and also hand crafted gifts from locals. Maybe next year it'll snow a little bit.
